SUMMARY:“Stories of the wind” Tribute to pioneer director Joris Ivens
DESCRIPTION:“STORIES OF THE WIND” TRIBUTE TO PIONEER DIRECTOR JORIS IVENS (1898-1989) \n18 &19 August 2025\nAt Ciné Avli of Andros Film Club \n11th International Andros Festival \nCuration: Pantelis Voulgaris\nIn collaboration with: Taksiarhis Deligiannis\nVasilis Tsiouvaras \nThis year\, the Festival commemorates Joris Ivens\, an exceptional and pioneering European documentary filmmaker. During the two-day tribute to his work (18 & 19 August)\, the festival will screen two of his most important short films\, “Borinage” (1934) and “The Spanish Earth” (1938)\, and the feature film “A Tale of the Wind” (1988)\, the last one of his career that he made at the age of 90. The screenings will be introduced by director Dimitris Indares.\nJoris Ivens was born in Nijmegen\, the Netherlands\, and died in Paris\, France. The “passionate lover of humanity” or “citizen of the world”\, as he was called\, combined many of his travels with his films. In the Soviet Union he documented the methods of suppressing a strike (“Song of Heroes”\, 1932). In Spain he made a documentary in support of the democratically elected Republicans during the Spanish Civil War (“The Spanish Earth”\, 1938). In China he spoke about the heroic resistance of the Chinese people against the Japanese invasion (“The 400 Million”\, 1939).\nHis collaborations with other filmmakers were significant and fruitful. Together with Frank Capra he made the documentary series “Why We Fight” (1943). He collaborated with the brothers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani on the documentary “Italy Is Not a Poor Country” (1960)\, combining different film genres. He also participated in the collective documentary “Far from Vietnam” (1967) with Jean-Luc Godard\, Alain Resnais\, Agnès Varda and many other acclaimed directors.\nHis inexhaustible filmography includes\, among other films\, “Tomorrow in Nagila” (1960)\, “A People in Arms” (1961) and “The Victory Train” (1964)\, in which he describes the battles of various peoples and countries\, empathising with them. The 763-minute documentary “How Yukong Moved the Mountains” (1977)\, which records the Chinese Cultural Revolution\, also holds a distinct place in Ivens’ filmography. Finally\, in his autobiographical film “A Tale of the Wind” (1988)\, Ivens summarises his life and career with the wisdom of a well-travelled humanist.\nAmong his numerous international awards are the Short Film Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1958 and the special prize for his entire body of work at the Venice Film Festival in 1988. \nScreening start time: 18 & 19 August\, 9:00 PM

SUMMARY:«Electra» by Sophocles – Syros Theater-Cultural Association ‘Apollon’
DESCRIPTION:The Syros Theater-Cultural Association ‘Apollon’ presents Sophocles’ tragedy ‘Electra’ at the Open-Air Theatre of Andros on Tuesday 20th August\, at 09:00 PM. \nAn honest communication with the treasure of our ancient drama\, the eternal work which is appreciated and admired by the entire humankind. \nWe welcome the initiative of the International Festival of Andros to include a Cycladic artistic creation in its artistic programme. \nOur participation in the 5th Festival is a great honour for us and we warmly thank Mr Pantelis Voulgaris\, the art director of the Festival\, who trusted us and gave us the opportunity to represent the creative artistic endeavour of our island. \n  \n \n  \nThe plot of the play \nElectra lives in Argos\, where she mourns the death of her father Agamemnon and openly accuses her mother Clytemnestra and her husband Aegisthus of Agamemnon’s murder. She awaits the return of her brother\, Orestes\, who will take revenge on their fathers’ murder and will succeed to the throne that he rightfully owns. \nOrestes returns to his homeland\, together with his pedagogue who acts as a counsellor and his friend Pylades who acts as an assistant\, with the aim of taking revenge for his father’s death. In order that this aim is achieved\, the pedagogue appears at first and informs Clytemnestra that Orestes lost his life in a chariot race. Then\, Orestes and Pylades arrive carrying an urn that supposedly contains Orestes’ ashes. \nWhen Electra hears that her brother is dead\, she loses all hope and mourns so much that Orestes is touched and is forced to reveal his real identity to her. Then comes the revenge; Clytemnestra and Aegisthus are murdered by Orestes\, while Electra is the instigator of the murder. \nELECTRA BY SOPHOCLES\nTranslation: Giorgos Blanas \nDIRECTION-LIGHTING\nGiorgos Pahos \nSCENERY\nPinelopi Aslanoglou \nCHOREOGRAPHY\n(Original choreographies-Selection of choreographies-Teaching)\nElisavet Apostolidou \nMUSIC\nΒ’ stasimon (‘Fimi Ton Anthropon…’ – ‘People’s Fame…’)\nNikos Kipourgos\nMonody of Chrysothemis\nDimitris Theocharis \nThe performance has English surtitles \n \n \n \nPhotos: Maria Lampriadou

SUMMARY:«Adiós Niña» (Goodbye\, Girl) – Microscopic Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Federico García Lorca‘s songs are performed as an epic representation of the world\, focusing on the female form. \nThe popular cycle of the thirteen traditional Spanish songs (canciones populares) that the great poet and musician collected and adjusted for female voice and piano\, explores the global themes of traditional songs: the drama of life and its stages\, joy and sorrow\, love and heartbreak\, death\, work and the struggle for survival\, war and peace. Also\, the songs explore the play\, nature and its landscapes\, affectionate moments such as a lullaby\, celebrations\, weddings and ceremonies which express the collective life of a society\, and national\, religious or simply local pride. One of the songs contains the phrase ‘Viva Seville!’\, while bullfight is probably the only purely Spanish theme of the songs. \nThe performance of the Microscopic Theater links the song themes with a stage action that is undivided in space and time\, without linear narration. Each microscopic movement or gesture of the dance is recorded to the entirety of the play at any moment\, thus it is not necessary that the narration is linked with the individual themes or that the audience simultaneously focuses on the song lyrics. The cohesive forms of the action are the ones of reflection and dream\, as the dancers dive in the fertile collectivity of the unconscious in order to improvise the expression which fits every moment the most. Instead of describing\, they commune; instead of performing\, they embody. The images which are created on the stage sometimes illustrate the visible world and sometimes illustrate the shifting and the changes of the mind and the soul. \nThe song of the lyrical singer Roxani Papadimitriou is the source and the element that gives birth to the performance. As the singer is fully integrated in the choreographic action\, she remains ‘invisible’\, however\, in essence\, she expressively and mentally guides and defines the performance. She functions as a catalyst that converts the action of the dance group into a musical event. Thus\, the performance\, due to its morphological distinctiveness\, can be described more properly as a ‘musical installation’ and not as a choreography. \nThe title ‘Goodbye\, Girl’ refers to the female coming of age as a motto\, a wish and a riddle. \nAnastasia Lyra created the choreography and the scenery of the performance. Roxani Papadimitriou performs the songs\, while Despo Varoudaki and Mihalis Sidiropoulos play the guitar. Alkis Spiliopoulos is responsible for the lighting design. The dance is performed by the dancers Titi Antonopoulou\, Anastasia Argiropoulou\, Aliki Kontziou Gousia\, Athina Kirousi\, Eva Pagoulatou\, Eleni Pantazatou\, Elina Papadopoulou and Vanesa Spinasa. \nThe Microscopic Theater is a theatrical venue located in the centre of Athens\, in Plaka; it has been presenting the Microscopic Theater dance group for the past five years. The core members of the group have been cooperating with the choreographer Anastasia Lyra for at least twenty years. The choreographer’s main scope of work centres on classical music and dance improvisation. \nThe group of the Microscopic Theater has all the characteristics of an ensemble which relies on the long-standing cooperation of the majority of its members.

SUMMARY:«Theogony» by Hesiod – Patari Project
DESCRIPTION:Description of the play \nIn a period in which we are asked to start from scratch\, being based only on ourselves\, we realise that people increasingly feel the need to understand their origin. \nBoth children and adults need to listen to a fairytale before they fall asleep; a fairytale which justifies the things that the mind cannot explain. \n‘Theogony’ is one of the first attempts to explain the origin of human existence. It is one of the first big fairytales. \nThe performance tries to introduce or remind us of a great work of the ancient world and global intellectby employing an original\, bodily narration. \nIn the same way as Hesiod returns to the primary materials and roots of the world\, the performance also uses the body\, its properties and its abilities as the primary material and narrative tool. This play is not based on the scenery\, costumes and lighting. It is focused on the actors\, on the human beings; it is based on human imagination and inventiveness. \nIt is suggested that the play is presented at the Ancient Epidaurus Little Theatre– a space that\, in my experience\, functions as a channel where the narration and meaning are released and exculpated. \nWe aim to create a lively\, fun and touching performance which will make us wonder which is our own Earth\, our own Sky and our own Chaos. \n‘Theogony –ABig Celebration’\n(Inspired by Hesiod’s ‘Theogony’) \nConception-Idea: Patari Project \nDirection: Sofia Pashou \nDramaturgy: Katerina Mavrogeorgi \nMusic: Nikos Galenianos\, Stamatis Pasopoulos \nScenery: EvangeliaTherianou \nCostumes: Claire Bracewell \nMovement: ErifiliStefanidou \nLighting: Sofia Alexiadou \nPhotography: Panagiotis Maidis \nPost-production: Marianna Pana \nCast (in alphabetical order): \nHara Kotsali\, TheodosisKonstas\, ThanosLekkas\, Katerina Mavreogeorgi\, Kitty Paitazoglou\, ErifiliStefanidou\, Aleksandros Chrysanthopoulos\, ApostolisPsihramis. \nMusicians on stage: Stamatis Pasopoulos\, Nikos Galenianos \nSofia Pashou’s Curriculum Vitae \nSophia Pashou studied in ‘Arhi’ Drama School and in London International School of Performing Arts (LISPA). She completed theLISPA pedagogical training program on scholarship and entered the School’s workforce. She is a founding member of the ‘Patari Project’ group\, in which she has directed the following performances: ’10 cm up’\, ‘Odyssey’\, ‘Bal in the Air’\, ‘I catch a Shoe on the Piano’\, ‘Nose’ and ‘Hionani’. As an actress\, she has collaborated with LiloBaur\, with Helen Chadwick at the Royal Opera House in London\, with DessislavaStefanova\, with the ‘Out of Chaos’ and ‘Babakas’ groups etc. She has also been responsible for the element of movement in the following plays: ‘Iphigenia in Tauris’ (National Theatre of Northern Greece)\, ‘K’s Trial’ (Porta Theatre)\, ‘Arrival’ (Ancient Epidaurus Little Theatre)\, ‘Candide or Optimism’ (Porta Theatre)\, ‘Fahrenheit 451’ (Athens Festival)\, ‘Frogs’ (Epidaurus Festival) etc. Regarding her educational activity\, she runs courses and seminars for children\, adolescents and actors. She is an external collaborator of the workshop of KseniaKalogeropoulou’s Porta Theatre\, of London Bubble and of the BE-Festival. She has also taught at the Birmingham School of Acting and at the National Theatre of England. \n \n \n \nPhotos: Dimitra Milaiou

SUMMARY:«Oedipus Rex» by Sophocles – Athens Theaters
DESCRIPTION:  \nAthens Theatres present Sophocles’ great tragedy ‘Oedipus Rex’\, directed by Konstantinos Markoulakis\, which goes on a tour in Greece. \nDimitris Lignadis and Amalia Moutousi co-star in the play\, in the roles of Oedipus and Jocasta respectively. The protagonists are accompanied by the actors Nikos Chatzopoulos(Creon)\, Konstantinos Avarikiotis (Tiresias)\, GiorgosZiovas (Messenger)\, GiorgosPsichogios (Therapist)\, Nikos Chanakoulas (Second Messenger) and a chorus of 10 other actors and musicians. \nThe plot: \nThe play begins with a mystery. The city of Thebes is ravaged by a plague and King Oedipus tries to uncover the reason behind this misfortune. According to Apollo’s oracle\, Laius’ murder has to avenged in order that the plague stops. The King decides to solve the riddle and\,thus\, devastating revelations are brought to light.\nTwo axes complement each other in this play\, which is the greatest ancient drama that has survived. \nThe first axis is the perfect plot of the play; this is the first suspense thriller in global dramaturgy (the Anglo-Saxons refer to this genre with the term ‘whodunitplay’). The hero unravels the series of events and masterfully reaches the centre of the labyrinth\, where the pursuer and the pursued are the same person. Even if we sometimes do not appreciate this axis enough and search for different qualities\, the phrase ‘Polivos was not your father’ always makes the audience shiver. And the game of the fate is still halfway. \nThe second axis\, the one that renders ‘Oedipus’ the first existential play in global dramaturgy\, is the ‘Who am I?’ question that the protagonist asks and the tools that he uses to answer it. These are the tools that humans – especially in the Western world – have idolized: rational thinking\, reason and logic. They are the only tools we have and they have tremendously contributed to the development of the human species; however\, they are not enough. Because if someone decides to put this question\, they also have to be ready to receive the answer. And\, as the poet says\, the truth ‘is revealed only when facing death’. \nOedipus is the first human of our dramaturgy; he is its Adam. And his fate makes us humble. \n  \nCredits\nTranslation: Giannis Lignadis\nDirection: Konstantinos Markoulakis\nStaging-Costumes: Paris Meksis\nMusic: Minos Matsas\nMovement: Kiki Mpaka\nLighting: AlekosGiannaros\nAssistantDirectors: Dimitra Dermitzaki\, Elena Skoula\nAssistant Composer: Dimitra Agrafioti\nProduction: Athens Theatres \nCast:\nDimitris Lignadis: Oedipus\nAmalia Moutousi: Jocasta\nNikos Chatzopoulos: Creon\nKonstantinos Avarikiotis: Tiresias\nGiorgosZiovas: Messenger\nGiorgos Psichogios: Therapist\nNikos Chanakoulas: SecondMessenger\nChorus: Michalis Afolagian\, Dimitris Georgalas\, Dimitris Karaviotis\, Kostas Korakis\, AlkiviadisMaggonas\, Dimitris Mavros\, Vasilis Papadimitriou\, Giannis Politakis\, GiorgisTsouris\, Vangelis Psomas

SUMMARY:«tempus fugit» - Dance Theater cie. toula limnaios
DESCRIPTION:Concept/Choreography: Toula Limnaios \nMusic: Ralf R. Ollertz \nDance/Creation: Daniel Afonso\, Leonardo D’Aquino\, Priscilla Fiuza\, Alba de Miguel\, Alessio Scandale\, Hironori Sugata\, Karolina Wyrwal \nLighting design: Felix Grimm \nStage/Costumes: Antonia Limnaios/ Toula Limnaios \nIn tempus fugit seven dancers continually move as a group\, as a flowing unit. Propelled forward by an inner unison\, they produce an allembracing tide. A round dance like a single shared movement nevertheless at moments revealing the individual. Nothing lasts forever – the flow of time cannot be detained. But how do we really live in it? Has the hustle and bustle of daily life consumed us all? Compared to the breathlessness of our lives\, the horde resembles a muscle\, brimming with vitality and solidarity. Mass and identity\, power and momentum are its central phenomena – the group as a microcosm that frees us from the prison of isolation and unleashes new strength. \n“Toula Limnaios’ associative visual worlds reveal disturbing and simultaneously intense as well as precise movement details… The striking strength of this choreographer lies in her ability to stage a scenic plurality of opposing events that culminate in a pensive final metaphor. This is what leaves its mark in the audience’s memory.”\n(Neues Deutschland/ tanznetz) \n  \n \n  \nTours: Germany\, Armenia\, Trinidad&Tobago\, Nicaragua\, Spain\, Romania\, Greece\, Italy \nA cie. toula limnaios production in cooperation with the HALLE TANZBάHNE BERLIN and with the kind support of the Cultural Department of the City of Berlin. \nThe cie. toula limnaios is an ensemble for contemporary dance\, founded in 1996 by choreographer and performer Toula Limnaios and composer Ralf R. The Berlin-based choreographer never ceases to evolve\, regenerate\, and scrutinize in order to bestow upon the audience new and challenging experiences that go under the skin. Her newest production “tempus fugit” can be best described as a concentrate of harrowing and powerful emotions: Toula spares nobody here! Just as in her poetic “minute papillon” (December 2015)\, the human herd behaviour and the consequent peer pressure stand in the middle of Toula´s narrative interest. Her piece tackles the shallow depths of present times and penetrates into the spaces in which one sweats out their emotions. The intertwining and divisive lines of the seven dancers (Daniel Afonso\, Leonardo D’Aquino\, Daeho Lee\, Katja Scholz\, Hironori Sugata\, Karolina Wyrwal\, Inhee Yu)\, merge to seize the entire space with a hectic performance. A strong gestural intensity emerges between uplifts and tormented glances. \nOn a stage covered by a sea of dead leaves\, a dance of automatons commences and exposes one or two black sheep on the horizon. The poignant Katja Scholz is one of them. The virtuous dancer attempts to stand out\, yet she quickly returns on the planned track\, like a small obedient robot roughly guided by one of her ‘master-like’ colleagues. An additional strong image: each protagonist strives to imitate the movements of an infant or a doll that is continuously abused by the others. An all-too-effective metaphor that touches with its cold (and perhaps truthful?) perversity. \nResembling puppets\, the bodies (covered with dry clay) swirl\, intersect\, crash against the wall and stumble over each other. Like time\, they go backwards and forwards in entanglement which simultaneously constructs and collapses them. Hearts are also short of breath with the rhythm of this destructive\, frantic life on the edge of the madness. The flesh is accentuated and the faces are tense. As the lines are dispersed\, they nevertheless fuse together in a common and cacophonic roar. \nIn combination with the unusual musical soundtrack (Haydn\, Mahler and Ralf R. Ollertz)\, the power of the form fluctutates between attraction and aversion. This newly arranged score undeniably fits the circumstances and is in perfect tune with the oppression manifested. A glimmer of hope ? Not really. The last scene\, in which Leonardo D Aquino tramples over the bodies laughing\, leaves everyone in the audience pensive.” \nhttp://cccdanse.com\, reviews\, Léa Chalmont \n \n \n \nPhotos: Maria Lampriadou\, Dimitra Milaiou

SUMMARY:«Plutus» by Aristophanes – Laiki Skini Of Andros
DESCRIPTION:Laiki Skini of Andros presents the ‘Plutus’ theatrical play\, written by Aristophanes\, in the summer of 2019. \n‘Plutus’ is Aristophanes’ last surviving comedy. It was written in 388 BC and marks the transition from the Old to the New Attic Comedy. \nIn this comedy\, Aristophanes satirises the uneven distribution of wealth by Plutus (‘Wealth’)\, who approaches the evil people because he is blind. Zeus punished god Plutus by making him blind\, so that he would avoid the righteous\, the wise and the honest people. After Chremylos and his slave cure Plutus and make him regain his eyesight\, the latter distributes his wealth to the benevolent and impoverishes the rich. \nThus\, the overturned status quo causes chain reactions that illustrate the social patterns of Aristophanes’ era; these patterns are very similar to today’s society\, which is thirsty for wealth. \n  \nDirection: Nikos Psarianos \nCast:\nChristos Kotsarinis (Carion)\,\nVasilis Pomonis (Chremylos)\,\nGiorgos Maltabes (Plutus)\,\nGiorgos Eleftheriou (Vlepsidimos)\,\nAngeliki Strati (Penia)\,\nDespoina Manesi (Chremylos’ Wife)\,\nGiorgos Kairis (Righteous Man)\,\nTaksiarhis Stratomitros (Defamer)\,\nVivi Daniolou (Old Woman)\,\nMarios Antonios Konstantopoulos (Young Man)\,\nEfthimia Koulouri (Hermes)\,\nGiannis Doulgeridis (Priest) \nChorus: Thanasis Karpouzis\, Varvara Patesta\, Elli Pertesi\, Gelly Hala\, Niki –Faidra Pomoni\, Leonardos Dimas \nParticipate the young actors: Giannis Stratomitros\, Nikos Margretis \nPrompt box: Aliki Pertesi \nMusicians onstage: Vangelis Halas – violin\, Thanasis Karpouzis – bagpipe\, dulcimer. \n \n \nPhotos: Maria Lampriado

SUMMARY:THE FROGS  by Aristophanes
DESCRIPTION:In ‘The Frogs’\, a comedy which was taught in Linaia in 405 BC\, Dionysus\, disappointed by the poor quality of the dramas that are produced in Athensas the great tragedians are dead\, descends into the underworld in order to bring back a great poet who is able to save Athens from the decadence. For this purpose\, he organises a poetry competition between Aeschylus and Euripides\, appointing Pluto as the judge so as to destroy him. And Aristophanes\, who relentlessly satirises the modern ethics and therefore Euripides-their representative at the time\, deems that Aeschylus is better. Aeschylus will be the winner. \n  \n    The Director’s note:  \n  \nIn The Frogs\, Aristophanes unfolds a phantasmagoric nekyiain the orchestra\, as if he were Odysseus who is searching for the way to his utopian Ithaca. One has to learn what death is in order to live out their life. The polis (city-state) has to realise which its deficiencies are\, so as to be present as a polis. It has to sink in the foreign world of Hades to obtain its identity. \nGod Dionysus will descend into Hades\, disguised as Hercules\, in order to bring Euripides back to the earth\, since not even one great poet is left in Athens anymore. Even though this trip is taken in the imposing gloom of the world of souls\, it possesses the cheerfulness of an entertaining tour which verges on the medieval carnival. \nDionysus does not descend into Hades to bring back a good old politician or a good old philosopher or general\, but in order to bring back a tragic poet. It is obvious that Aristophanes considers poetry and theatre to be the only remedy against the decadence of the country. By our own standards\, this is really strange. \n  \n \n    Performance details \n  \nDirection:  KostasFilippoglou \nTranslation:  GiorgosBlanas \nAssistant director:  GiotaSeremeti\, Silia Koi \nScenery – Costumes: TelisKarananos\, AlexandraSiafkou \nMotion: SofiaPaschou \nMusic: NikosGalenianos \nLighting: NikosVlasopoulos \nPhotography: PanosGiannakopoulos \nPerformance promotionand communication: DaisyLempesi+30 6908502631 daisylempesi@hotmail.gr \n  \n  \nCAST \n  \nActors (in order of appearance) \n  \nLakisLazopoulos \nSofia Filippidou \nDimitris Piatas \nandAntonisKafetzopoulos \n  \nTogether with: \n  \nAnnaKalaitzidou \nGiannisStefopoulos \nGiorgosSimeonidis \nErifiliStefanidou \nTasosDimitropoulos \nGiannisGiannoulis \nDimitrisDrosos \nEirini Bountali \nFivosSimeonidis \nChristosKontogeorgis \nAlexandrosChrisanthopoulos \n  \nMusicians – perfomers \n  \nStamatis Pasopoulos \nChristoph Blum \n  \nAll the cast participates in the chorus. \n  \n  \nTicket prices  \nGeneral admission 20euros \n15 euros\,  students and unemployed

SUMMARY:Timon of Athens By William Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:TIMON OF ATHENS \nBy William Shakespeare \n(Written in 1604-1605. Performed in 1607 for the first time.) \n  \n ‘We are born to do good deeds and what else can we more rightly deem to be ours\, rather than our friends’ wealth?’ \n  \nWilliam Shakespeare borrowed the story of Timon of Athens –the generous lord who accepted and welcomed everybody\, the idealist who sincerely believed in the ideal of friendship and unconditional love and wholost his faith in humanity\, having been betrayed by the reality– from Ploutarchos and Loukianos. Based on this true story\, he created a powerful metaphor with deep meaning and vivid images; he produced a dramatic play taken from the reality of life. In this play\, Shakespeare’s era is illustrated accurately\, but it is also very familiar to modern viewers\, who recognize themselves\, human relations around them and the modern culture ideas in the characters\, the plot and the words. \n \n  \nContributors \n  \nAuthor: William Shakespeare \nTranslation: ErrikosMpelies \nDirection: TheoniReid \nMusic composition: MariaMouriki \nPainting: AristeaGravou\, Nikos Pantzopoulos \nChoreography: GeorgiaKsanthou \nMotion: TheoniReid \nScenography&Costumes: TheoniReid \nStagestructures: AristeaGravou\, NikosPantzopoulos\, TheoniReid\, AnestisChatzitheodorou \nCostume construction: EvgeniaBafaloukou\, PopiPatiri\, MariaPittakidi \nHairstyling: VasoZotali\, ArtemisChala \n  \nCast \n  \nTimon:                        GiorgosMaltabes \nApimantos:                 GiorgosTikopoulos \nAlkiviades:                 AntonisChalas \nFlavios:                       Christos Kotsarinis \nLords:                         DimitrisMamais\, KostasGarifallos \nLadies:                        AndriannaKorkodilou\, OlgaTaka \nSenators:                    LeonardosKarapiperis\, NikosPantzopoulos\, Christos Skandalis \nPainter:                       Thodoris Koulouris \nPoet:                           GiannoulisPetsas \nTimon’sservants:       VasilikiPertesi\, GiannoulisPetsas\, DimitrisTokouroglou \nLords’ servants:         AntoniaZannou-Rodamnaki\, IoannaKatsarou\, MariaPittakidi\, ChristinaRaisi\, Anna Chroni \nOldman:                      AnestisChatzitheodorou \nDaughter:                   IriniChli \nProstitutes:                Francesca Raisi\, IriniChli\, ToulaKatsiotou-Chli \nDancers:                     ChrisavgiStrantzali\, AthinaChala \nMusicians:                  KarolosGiagiannis\, LeonidasKolelis\, DimosthenisLagios\, IliasPolemis \n  \n  \n  \nTicketprice: \nGeneral admission 10 euros \n  \n

SUMMARY:Peace By Aristophanes
DESCRIPTION: The most complete\, most beautiful and most sarcastic anti-war play that has been ever written. \n\nThe PEACE performance was awarded by UNESCO in 2016 as the best children’s play of the year. \n \nPresentation of the play\n  \nThe gods loathe people because of their wars and abandon them in order for them to be destroyed. Trigeos of Athens\, a pacifist winegrower\, tries to fly to heaven on a beetle (which he grows by feeding it on manure and faeces) in order to find Zeus and beg him to stop the war. \nAt Mount Olympus he finds only Hermes\, who reveals to him that War imprisoned Peace in a dark cave\, whose entrance he blocked with a huge\, immovable rock. After numerous adventures and with the audience’s help\, Trigeos manages to set Peace free and bring her back to the people. \nHowever\, until he permanently establishes Peace\, various people come to his house. Warmongers (armourers\, fake fortune tellers\, slanderers and demagogues) who try to imprison Peace again\, but also farmers\, craftsmen\, scythe makers\, hard-working people and pacifists who make every effort to preserve and protect Peace in order to leave fairly and harmonically. \nThe play was written by Aristophanes during the Peloponnesian War\, in 421 BC\, at a time when everyone knew that the parties in the conflict would come to a compromise. This comedy is a festive play which welcomes the approaching period of peace. \n  \nThe adaptation of the play by Giannis Kalantzopoulos is considered to be the best adaptation for children that has been made up to now. He has retained the great ancient poet’s precise style and ethics\, his deep meanings as well as the magnificent melodic parts of his plays. We have combined ‘PEACE‘ with shadow play (which has borrowed many features from Aristophanes); we have imitated Spatharis‘ distinctive voice because we want our young spectators to hear sounds and to have memories from remarkable people of the authentic folk theatre\, and we have produced a wonderful theatrical performance for both children and adults. \n  \nContributors\n  \nAdaptation: Giannis Kalantzopoulos \nDirection: Makis Arvanitakis \nMusic: Dimitris Lekkas \nCostumes: Kaiti Maleskou\nCast: Makis Arvanitakis\, Thekla Manteli\,  Iordanis Kalesis\, Vasilis Mamonas\, Katerina Oikonomidi\, Dominiki Papastergiou\, Sofia Lampidoni. \n  \nGeneral admission 12 euros \n

SUMMARY:Erotokritos by Hainides band
DESCRIPTION:Erotokritos by Hainides band \nKi omos kineitai Dance Circus Collective \n  \nA seminal work in the history of Greek literature and of 17th-century Crete\, Erotokritos by VitsentzosKornaros is possibly the last surviving work referencing the great folk tradition of Greek rhapsodists. Two gurus of Cretan music\, the mystic lyre-player Psarantonis and Dimitris Apostolakis of the Hainides band\, take on Erotokritos in a mixed-media performance that rallies the talents of acrobats\, doffs its cap to medieval folk fêtes and introduces the term ‘singing narration’.The Hainides band\, in full growth\, is joined by the ‘Ki omos kineitai’group. \n \n  \nErotokritos is undoubtedly the masterpiece of the Cretan Renaissance\, and perhaps the supreme achievement of modern Greek literature. It is a verse romance written around 1600 by VitsentzosKornaros (1553-1613). In over 10\,000 lines of rhyming fifteen-syllable couplets\, the poet relates the trials and tribulations suffered by two young lovers\, Erotokritos and Aretousa (daughter of Herakles\, the king of Athens). \n \nErotokritos home trailer from kiomoskineitai on Vimeo. \nCaught in their love for one another\, their faith and virtue are subjected to various ordeals until they are eventually united in wedlock. \nSerenades\, gallant deeds\, secrets and revelations\, jousting\, tears\, finger-rings\, vows of unending love\, fatal duels and tournaments all serve to compose the tale of the love-sick hero and his beloved. \n \nIt was a tale that enjoyed enormous popularity among its Greek readership and succeeded in making Erotokritos something of a folk hero. \nThe plot of the poem was hardly original: Kornaros borrowed it from an Italian prose translation of a standard medieval French romance\, Paris et Vienne\, by Pierre de la Cypède. However\, the Cretan poet\, in true Renaissance fashion\, turned the themes of love and war in the prototype entirely to his own purposes\, showing himself to be a skilled storyteller and a sensitive interpreter of the human heart. He arranged the plot into five parts\, much like a work for the theatre\, and subtly balanced his narrative with dialogues so as to create a rhythm that sustains brilliantly the interest of the reader. \nWith exemplary internal consistency and focus\, he assembles the components of his imaginary world – located in the Greek East and centred on Athens\, ‘the throne of virtue and the river of wisdom’ – in unique fashion\, while his characters are alive with real feelings and a passionate thirst for life. His portrayals are remarkable for their rich and unaffected expressiveness\, their visual power\, the extended similes\, and rich lyrical treatment of nature by which the subtlest facets of the human soul are explored. \n \nKornaros does not hesitate to draw on the Greek poetic tradition\, particularly the vernacular romances\, of which Erotokritos comprises not only the natural development but also the supreme example. \n \n  \n  \nTicketprice: \nGeneral admission 15 euros \nFor Students (up to 17 years old)  5 euros \n  \n

SUMMARY:"Helen" by Giannis Ritsos
DESCRIPTION:‘HELEN’ \nby Giannis Ritsos \nDirected by Vasilis Papavasileiou \n  \n2001…2009…2017: ‘Helen’ by Giannis Ritsos\, embodied on stage by Vasilis Papavasileiou\, is reborn every eight years and is returning this year\, paying – as always – tribute to the power of poetry\, theatre and life. \nAlready counting 150 performances in Greece and abroad\, ‘Helen’ reembarks on its journey and travels to the Open-Air Theatre of Chora\, Andros. \nThe design of ‘Helen’ has its roots in the theatrical event that was held in summer 1999 in Pnika\, in the framework of the Athens Festival\, entitled ‘Mr Giannis Ritsos’. \n \nVasilis Papavasileiou writes about the text: \nThe ‘female monologues’ of the ‘Fourth Dimension’ which are related to the ancient times. They are performed by actresses who usually produce spectacular results (personally\, I have been lucky to admire some of these results) but they inevitably remind us of the closed world of ‘psychological theatre’. In my opinion\, the identification of the performer’s sex with the sex of the theatrical ‘persona’ is responsible for this misleading deduction. Why is it misleading? Because Giannis Ritsos is much closer to his ancient colleague than to Tennessee Williams. We could say that Williams constitutes the beginning in order for Ritsos to cross the river of the theatre and meet Euripides. Ritsos’ theatre is a theatre of language and ideas. The human passion\, whether it concerns the female or the male soul\, is lit affectionately and cruelly at the same time\, as a prey to a higher combination of powers which bear the nice names Passion\, Glory\, Beauty and form the web of our Fate. \nIn Ritsos’ monologues\, passion is not presented as an immediate experience but as a retrospection. Language is the vehicle of this retrospection. Even more so\, language and its game are the sole identity of Ritsos’ characters. The conventional names Aias\, Orestis\, Eleni etc. do not represent human beings but knots of the Myth or\, in other words\, of the indestroyable power of the Impersonal which weaves\, which knits our short life. What else did the ancient tragedy do? \n \n  \nPerformance Details: \nDirection: Vasilis Papavasileiou \nScenography: Marie-Noëlle Semet \nLighting: Eleftheria Deko \nArtistic collaborator- Production: Nikoleta Filosoglou \n  \nActors: Vasilis Papavasileiou\, Nikos Sakalidis \n  \nGeneral admission 12 euros

SUMMARY:Music concert: Katerina Polemi
DESCRIPTION:KATERINA POLEMI \n‘Αγάπη\, love\, amor’ \nSummer 2018 \nAndros Festival \nMonday 30 July \nAfanous Nafti  Square \n  \nKaterina Polemi\, the woman we have seen in diverse music roles over the past years\, is giving a personal performance in summer 2018. \nShe has selected Greek love songs\, well-known foreign songs and some of her own songs in order to stand on the stage\, in front of us\, and connect the images that she has created in our minds throughout her musical career in Greece as well as in Brazil. She will perform songssuchas ‘Sinora I Agapi Den Gnorizei’ (‘Love Knows No Borders’)\, ‘Mi Milas Allo GiAgapi’ (‘Don’t Talk about Love Anymore’) and ‘Tis Mias Drachmis Ta Giasemia’ (‘Jasmines Worth One Drachma’)\, together with her own songs\, such as ‘To Vals Tou Orfea’ (‘Orfeas’ Waltz’) in a new reading. \n \nWe could say that Katerina Polemi belongs to a unique category\, since she was discovered to be an award-winning composer in PantelisVoulgaris’ film Little England\, written by IoannaKarystianiand awarded for theatrical music. We have also found out that Katerina Polemiis an outstanding performer of her own songs\, with special renditions. Her live performance of songs is distinctive; let us take for example the song ‘MiMilasAlloGiAgapi’(‘Don’t Talk about Love Anymore’)\, which she sang at the performance ‘TO FORTIGO’ (‘THE TRUCK’) of D. Savvopoulos\, with whom she has made many appearances and continues collaborating. \n \nShe has begun her fascinating musical journey with performances and experimentations among different kinds and languages both in Greece and in Brazil\, which makes her a special musician. Her music and lyrics emerge from the modern culture of the young people who travel around the world\, whether by physical presence or via the internet\, and she writes songs in Greek\, in English and in Portuguese\, expressing a new multiculturalism and rendering it with tenderness\, power\, passion and love. \n \nThis summer\, in the performance ‘Αγάπη\, love\, amor’\, she is going towander from jazz tone colours to new-wave soft guitar chords. \nKaterina Polemi performs in duet with Vangelis Tountas\, an award-winning musician\, composer and orchestrator with a unique stage presence. \n \n  \nTicket price: \nGeneral admission 5 euros \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Persians by Aeschylus\, Cyprus Theatre Organisation
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \nLast year’s big success of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation\, which impressed the audience and the critics\, is repeated in Cyprus with a limited number of performances and then embarks on an important tour in Greece. \n \n  \nThe Persians\, the oldest ancient Greek drama that has been saved and the only one which is based on historical facts\, document the defeat of the Persian arrogance and the triumph of the Greek spirit\, adopting a special narrative form. The play is presented by the Cyprus Theatre Organisation and it is directed by Aris Biniaris -a new director who has stood out for his electrifying performances- with the participation of a dynamic group of accomplished and rising actors including Kariofillia Karampeti\, Nikos Psarras\, Antonis Miriagos and Charis Charalambous. \n \n  \nAccording to the director\, ‘the performance is a theatrical and musical event at the same time and proposes a vivid composition of poetic words\, music and theatrical action. It releases the essence of Aeschylus’ work and leads the audience to the comprehension of the universal character of the ancient drama. The actors approach the meanings\, the rhythm and the sounds of the poetic text\, with musicality being the vehicle for representation and transformation. All the main characters\, as well as the Chorus\, are performed by revealing the musical nature of the play. Using such a simple composition\, the performance manifests itself through basic levels -action\, word\, singing\, dance- and achieves a simplicity which is sufficient for revealing the continuous vibrations of the ancient Greek drama and its impact on the modern audience’. \n \n  \nTranslation: Panagiotis Moullas \nDirection – Music dramaturgy: Aris Biniaris \nMetrical teaching: Theodoros Stefanopoulos \nScenery: Konstantinos Louka \nCostumes: Eleni Tzirkalli \nKinesiology: Lia Charaki \nLighting: Georgios Koukoumas \n \n  \nCast: \nKariofillia Karampeti\, Charis Charalambous\, \nNikos Psarras\, Antonis Miriagos \n  \nChorus: \nIlias Andreou\, Petros Giorkatzis\, Giorgos Evagorou\, Giorgos Onisiforou\,  Marios Konstantinou\, Panagiotis Larkou\, David Maltese\, Giannis Minos\, Aris Biniaris\, Onisiforos Onisiforou\, Stefanos Pittas\, Konstantinos Sevdalis \n  \n  \nGeneral admission: 16€ \nStudents\, children\, over 65 years: 12€ \nDisabled\, unemployed:  8€ \n  \n

SUMMARY:'Medea' - Euripides: Greek Art Theatre Karolos Koun
DESCRIPTION:  \nGreek Art Theatre Karolos Koun 2016-2017 \n  \nGREEK ART THEATRE KAROLOS KOUN \n‘Medea’ by Euripides \nThe barbarian side of love \n“Medea is barbarian twice\, by origin and by love”\, Giorgos Chimonas writes in the foreword of his translation. Love has two sides\, the barbarian one\, plunged into pain and darkness\, as well as the dreamlike\, sensational\, ideal one. Through the myth of Medea\, as it is presented in the work of Euripides\, but also through sections of texts and poems of the ancient Greek literature (Plato\, Theocritus\, Parthenios\, Ploutarchos\, Sappho\, Archilochos\, Meleagros and others) which are presented in the stasima (chorus parts between the main dialogues of the play)\, the performance of the Greek Art Theatre wishes to talk about the inexplicable element of love; about this “great evil that makes people break down”; about the desire which is tied to pain\, the vows of eternal love and faith which are made to be broken; about betrayal\, revenge and destruction; about this terrifying passage from the light into the darkness of the brutality of love. Because “there isn’t such terrible and incurable wrath compared to that which originates from people who once loved each other”. \nTranslation: Giorgos Chimonas \nDirection: Marianna Kalbari \nSetting-Costumes: Konstantinos Zamanis \nMusic: Panayiotis Kalantzopoulos \nChoreography: Mariza Tsiga \nLight Design: Stella Kaltsou \nPerformance dramaturge: Elena Triantafilopoulou \n1st Assistant Director: Katerina Georgoudaki \n2nd Assistant Director: Marilena Moschou \nAssistant Choreographer: Maria Papadopoulou \nAssistant Light Designer: Marina Konta \nThe sections of texts included in the stasima are presented in translation-rendition by Ioannis Polemis (Theocritus)\, Elena Triantafilopoulou and Marianna Kalbari. \nStarring: Maria Nafpliotou\, Charis Fragoulis\, Alexandra Kazazou\, Foteini Baxevani\, Theodora Dimou\, Sirmo Keke\, Ioanna Mavrea\, Alexandros Milonas\, Gerasimos Gennatas\, Konstantina Takalou. \nFour students of the Drama School of the Greek Art Theatre and four musicians also participate in the performance. \nTicket price: 18 euros\, 14 for students\, unemployed \n  \n
