SUMMARY:Sophocles’ Electra
DESCRIPTION:Sophocles’ Electra\nDirected by Dimitri Tarlow\n“Inextinguishable hatred\, rigid passion” \nDimitri Tarlow makes his directorial debut in ancient drama with the Sophocles version of Electra on 21st August 2025 at the Andros Open-Air Theatre \n \nIn a world plagued by totalitarianism and social injustice and an era where violence and revenge are often portrayed as “necessary evil\,” Sophocles’ Electra takes on an eerie relevance. Far from being merely a tale of vengeance\, this tragedy becomes a mirror that reflects humanity’s moral dilemmas and\, foremost\, the eternal conflict between justice and ethics. Our performance aims to highlight this complexity\, inviting the audience to confront crucial questions: What does it mean “to restore justice”? What is the imperative of duty? Can one live with the consequences of violence? Is violence an inevitable solution? Will revenge close the cycle of bloodshed? Is redemption ever possible? And\, finally\, what is the role of resistance when all seems lost? \nElectra\, a member of the accursed family of Atreides\, a woman entangled in this cycle of blood and horror\, is more than a tragic figure—she embodies the dilemma between the pursuit of justice and the moral imperative to forego violence. She is not just a tragic being of fate but a creation of her own volition\, one wholeheartedly invested in the cause of justice. Is she a victim of her obsession with revenge or maybe a voice of resistance against the brutality of power? And why\, when the palace is freed from its tyrants\, does she not step inside? Is it because she merely chooses to refrain from the House she despises so much or because she rejects the very system that she fought so vehemently against? Is she still a captive of the extreme emotions that defined her\, such as the grief for her father’s loss\, the hatred towards her mother\, and the longing for her lost brother? One thing is certain: her passion does not quiet down\, not even after the much-sought catharsis is accomplished. \n \nIn Electra\, the poet does not cater to answers. Gods are absent. Oracles coincide with human decisions by chance. Conscience falls by the wayside. The Furies are yet to appear. Still\, the burden for all survivors is heavy. It is this cost of choice\, this relentless human need for catharsis at any price\, that Sophocles’ Electra urges us to contemplate. After all\, Sophocles will not grace us with a sequel\, as he will not complete a trilogy\, and his work shall stop here. For every single one of the doubts and questions he once posed will find their resolution within these 1\,510 verses of astounding symmetry and economy. \nARTISTIC & PRODUCTION CREDITS\nTranslation: Giorgos Himonas\nDirection: Dimitri Tarlow\nSet design – Costume: Paris Meksis\nMusical composition: Fotis Siotas\nLighting design: Alekos Anastasiou\nChoreography: Markella Manoliadi\nDramaturgy: Eri Kyrgia\nSound design: Ilias Flammos\nAssistant directors: Dimitra Koutsokosta\, Aristi Tselou\nAssistant to the choreographer: Maro Stavrinou\nAssistants to the lighting designer: Haris Dallas\, Nafsika Hristodoulakou \nExecutive producer: Stella Yiovani\nProduction: Anna Pasparaki\, Vasilia Taskou\nCommunications & Press Office: Sasa Papahristopoulou\nAdvertising & Social Media: Renegade Media \nCAST\nElectra: Loukia Michalopoulou\nOrestes: Anastasis Roilos\nClytemnestra: Ioanna Pappa\nAegisthus: Nikolas Papagiannis\nPaedagogus: Giannis Anastasakis\nChrysothemis: Grigoria Metheniti\nPylades: Periklis Sioundas \nCHORUS (in alphabetical order)\nMargarita Aleksiadi\nAsimina Anastasopoulou\nEleni Vlahou\nIoanna Demertzidou\nEleni Kilinkaridou – Sisti\nIoanna Lekka\nLydia Stefou\nAnna Simeonidou\nHara Tzoka \nLive musicians on stage: Fotis Siotas\, Tasos Misurlis \nAdmission:\nGeneral admission: EUR 22\nDiscounted admission (students\, unemployed\, people with disabilities): EUR 18 \nPre-sale starts on 23 rd June 2025 at www.ticketservices.gr. SUMMARY:“Stories of the wind” Tribute to pioneer director Joris Ivens
DESCRIPTION:STORIES OF THE WIND” TRIBUTE TO PIONEER DIRECTOR JORIS IVENS (1898-1989) \n18 &19 August 2025\nAt Ciné Avli of Andros Film Club \n11th International Andros Festival \nCuration: Pantelis Voulgaris\nIn collaboration with: Taksiarhis Deligiannis\nVasilis Tsiouvaras \nThis year\, the Festival commemorates Joris Ivens\, an exceptional and pioneering European documentary filmmaker. During the two-day tribute to his work (18 & 19 August)\, the festival will screen two of his most important short films\, “Borinage” (1934) and “The Spanish Earth” (1938)\, and the feature film “A Tale of the Wind” (1988)\, the last one of his career that he made at the age of 90. The screenings will be introduced by director Dimitris Indares.\nJoris Ivens was born in Nijmegen\, the Netherlands\, and died in Paris\, France. The “passionate lover of humanity” or “citizen of the world”\, as he was called\, combined many of his travels with his films. In the Soviet Union he documented the methods of suppressing a strike (“Song of Heroes”\, 1932). In Spain he made a documentary in support of the democratically elected Republicans during the Spanish Civil War (“The Spanish Earth”\, 1938). In China he spoke about the heroic resistance of the Chinese people against the Japanese invasion (“The 400 Million”\, 1939).\nHis collaborations with other filmmakers were significant and fruitful. Together with Frank Capra he made the documentary series “Why We Fight” (1943). He collaborated with the brothers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani on the documentary “Italy Is Not a Poor Country” (1960)\, combining different film genres. He also participated in the collective documentary “Far from Vietnam” (1967) with Jean-Luc Godard\, Alain Resnais\, Agnès Varda and many other acclaimed directors.\nHis inexhaustible filmography includes\, among other films\, “Tomorrow in Nagila” (1960)\, “A People in Arms” (1961) and “The Victory Train” (1964)\, in which he describes the battles of various peoples and countries\, empathising with them. The 763-minute documentary “How Yukong Moved the Mountains” (1977)\, which records the Chinese Cultural Revolution\, also holds a distinct place in Ivens’ filmography. Finally\, in his autobiographical film “A Tale of the Wind” (1988)\, Ivens summarises his life and career with the wisdom of a well-travelled humanist.\nAmong his numerous international awards are the Short Film Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1958 and the special prize for his entire body of work at the Venice Film Festival in 1988. \nScreening start time: 18 & 19 August\, 9:00 PM

SUMMARY:“To Kaplani tis Vitrinas” (“Wildcat under glass”) by Alki Zei
DESCRIPTION:TO KAPLANI TIS VITRINAS (WILDCAT UNDER GLASS) by Alki Zei \nThe legendary “To Kaplani tis Vitrinas” (“Wildcat under glass”) by Alki Zei goes on tour throughout Greece.\nA milestone for children’s literature\, it has been translated into 22 languages and published in 39 foreign editions\, receiving numerous international awards. Having recently marked 60 years since its first launch\, it sets off on tour to tell its fascinating story that has captivated whole generations of readers. The story of human towards the conquest of freedom. A production of KOLOSSAION PRODUCTIONS.\nSummer. The magical season for children. Sea\, play\, exploration and endless nights with magical stories under the stars. A group of children in Lamagari\, Samos\, will live an adventure that will change their lives forever. \nAs the nation is forced into a fascist dictatorship on 4th August 1936\, the children take part in secret missions to help Melia and Mirto’s cousin\, Nikos\, a university student at risk of imprisonment. Nikos is hiding at Milos until he can escape to civil-war Spain and fight for democracy. However\, no matter how hard things are\, the children have by their side the wildcat that’s locked inside a glass cabinet in the living room of Melia and Mirto’s home. The Kaplani (as tigers are called in Samos) has the ability to come to life through Nikos’ stories. When necessary\, it joins the children’s difficult missions in its own magical way\, helping and protecting the children. \n“To Kaplani tis Vitrinas” is a story about the fascinating path that all living creatures\, humans and animals\, follow to live as they are made by nature: Free.\nAnd for this to happen\, there must be democracy\, even if we need to fight for it. So that\, if someone asks “Are you happy or sad?”\, we can answer “Happy” before we go to bed every night. \n \n  \nA few words about Alki Zei\nThe ambassador of Greek children’s literature\, Alki Zei\, was born in Athens and spent her early childhood years in Samos\, where her mother came from. When she started school\, her family settled in Marousi and then in Athens. She studied at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens\, the Drama School of the Athens Conservatory and the Moscow Film Institute. Writing came into her life in her high school years. She wrote puppet plays\, short stories and novellas\, which were published in various literary magazines. Alongside writing\, she actively fought for freedom\, social justice and democracy\, participating in the left-wing movement since the years of the German occupation in Greece. Fighting for this cause defined her personal life. From 1952 to 1964 she lived in the Soviet Union as a political refugee together with her husband\, playwright Giorgos Sevastikoglou. At first they lived in Tashkent and later in Moscow\, where their two children were born. They returned to Greece in 1964\, only to flee again in 1967 to Paris\, where they remained until the mid-1970s due to the dictatorship. Alki Zei’s straightforward style of writing\, linguistic integrity\, critical attitude towards people and situations\, humour and penetrating look at events\, are the characteristics of her works that have captivated Greek and foreign readers alike. Achille’s fiancée\, Wildcat Under Glass and Petros’ War are among the classic best sellers of contemporary Greek literature. With the exception of Achille’s fiancée\, Alki’s books mainly address children and adolescents\, but are always a great read for adults as well. Dealing with every-day\, universal issues\, Alki’s books are inspired by her personal experiences\, weaving their plot alongside historical events. “If I chose to write for children\, it is because I wanted to capture the important things my generation experienced\, which I fear will be forgotten when we are gone”\, she notes. Alki Zei is an ambassador of contemporary Greek literature abroad\, as all of her work has been translated and published in many countries around the world. \n \n  \nDirector’s note\nAlki Zei wrote stories whose magical element was the gaze of the children themselves; that secret garden that few adults manage to know where it is with such honesty\, love and courage. And Alki Zei seems to have known very well how to open this invisible door and get inside the souls and thoughts of children. Perhaps because she herself lived guided by her personal truth\, tenderness and boundless humour that followed her even in the hardest times of her life. Elements that the brave and tireless soul of children has in abundance\, in what we all once had. Our childhood. In Alki’s books there is a world that children recognise immediately and spontaneously\, because it is their own world. In her stories\, imagination is not just a place to escape but also a way to create reality. A world where people can coexist no matter how different they are. By always testifying\, through her characters\, that nothing is a given. That things are not always easy\, ideal and happy. At the same time\, this unique viewpoint also gives the perspective that\, within yourself\, you can always find the strength to believe in something better for your life and to have the right to dream about it. Without being didactic; without hiding the truth. I think this is what gives her works this timeless dynamic\, creating an open dialogue with children to this day. This vast magical world; when we were children\, we all knew that everything was possible there. This great world. Our childhood. And our only homeland.\nDimitra Larentzaki \n \nNote from Alki Zei’s son\, Petros Sevastikoglou\nWith Alki we never stopped travelling. Ten years ago we went on a trip that was somewhat different to our previous ones. We visited Samos island to film a documentary about Alki’s life. “The Great Walk of Alki”\, which never stopped\, returned to Vathi\, Lamagari\, where Alki spent her early childhood years. These years left such an imprint on her soul\, as alive as the wildcat in the glass cabinet\, which was the starting point for her first novel. The wildcat of the book was there\, inside its glass cabinet\, at the Museum of Natural History. Even though many years had passed and the wildcat was evidently worn down\, when Alki saw it\, she leaned over and said to it: “My wildcat\, it all started with you.” Alki didn’t spend her life yearning for the past. Even when she told stories about the old days\, it was in order to speak to young and old in the present. Just like Alki\, in our performance we have tried to tell the children of today this story from the past\, with great love and with everything that Alki has left open to tell the audience herself through the wildcat.\nPetros Sevastikoglou \nArtistic and production credits:\nAdaptation – Direction – Lyrics: Dimitra Larentzaki\nSet design: Katerina Papageorgiou\nCostume: Maria Kavalioti\nMusic: Kostas Vomvolos\nChoreography – Movement: Pashalia Akritidou\nLighting design: Trifon Kehagias\nVideo: Petros Sevastikoglou\nVideo animation: Babis Venetopoulos\nMasks: Olympia Sideridou\nAssistant director: Angelos Kourepis\nConstruction of the wildcat: Alexandros Konstantinidis\nPhotography: Giorgos Nakis\nTrailer: Panagiotis Kountouras\nPoster artwork: Moutzoura & Konstantinos Georgantas\nSet construction: KOLOSSAION PRODUCTIONS\nExecutive producer: Maria Prodromou\nProduction: KOLOSSAION PRODUCTIONS \nCast (in alphabetical order):\nSofia Mpletsou: Stamatina / Pipitsa\nViktoria Papadopoulou: Mirto\nPavlina Papadopoulou: Melia\nAndreas Papaioannou: cousin Nikos / the Dutch Consul\nThanos Poumakis: Nolis / the Prefect\nMaria Prodromou: aunt Despina / author\nKornilia Prokopiou: Artemi / wildcat / the Prefect’s wife\nStamatis Stamoglou: grandfather / the Despot \nAdmission:\nGeneral admission: EUR 13 \nPre-sale starts on 23rd June 2025 at www.ticketservices.gr. SUMMARY:Euripides’ ANDORMACHE
DESCRIPTION:Euripides’ A N D R O M A C H E Directed by Maria Protopappa \n~ When human justice fails\nNemesis restores balance\nand the right of women to claim their place in the world ~ \nMaria Protopappa makes her directorial debut with Euripides’ “Andromache”\, a tragedy that remains surprisingly timely\, exploring the experiences of terror and destruction\, individual choices and their profound influence on society. \nBased on the translation by G. V. Tsokopoulos\, the great director and actor Maria Protopappa dramaturgically and directorially elaborates on a work that raises crucial questions. With the dynamism that characterises her\, she also takes on the role of Woman. \nA unique acting ensemble plays the roles of the remaining tragic figures: Argyris Xafis plays Andromache\, Tasos Lekkas plays Hermione\, Giannis Dalianis plays Menelaus and Dimitris Piatas plays Peleus. In the role of Thetis we will see Stella Gika\, while the Chorus consists of Dimitris Georgiadis\, Dimitris Mamios\, Konstantinos Passas\, Giorgos Fasoulas\, Giannis Manthos and Nontas Damopoulos. \nEuripides’ tragedy\nWe are transported far from the great city-states\, deep into the Greek countryside: to Thessaly\, Phthiotis\, and\, finally\, Thetideion. To the house of Neoptolemus\, Achilles’ son. There we witness the dramatic conflict between two women: Andromache\, widow of Hector and slave of Neoptolemus\, and Hermione\, wife of Neoptolemus. Filled with jealousy and envy\, Hermione accuses Andromache that\, because of her\, Neoptolemus no longer loves her and does not wish to have a child with her\, while he already has a child with Andromache. The conflict reaches its extremes when Menelaus\, the king of Sparta and father of Hermione\, decides to kill Andromache’s child\, thus committing one of the most extreme acts of vengeance and arrogance. \nNeoptolemus\, the fierce\, ruthless and irreverent hero of the Iliad\, the one who cemented the victory of Greeks at Troy\, now proves incapable of fulfilling his roles as a father\, husband and leader. He flees in search of a cure at Apollo’s oracle in Delphi. His war-fuelled frenzy has tainted his marital bed\, his house and his city. Before the eyes of the woman he irreparably wronged\, he will receive the retribution known as “the Punishment of Neoptolemus”. \nIn an inversion of the heroic Iliad\, Euripides in “Andromache” lays bare the arrogance of the Greeks and the illusion of their cultural superiority. The pre-war promises for a united and mighty nation are dispelled amid a landscape ripe with decay\, ageing\, fear and envy. \nThe burden of responsibility falls not only on the architects of destruction but also on those who placed their beliefs in them and played a part in the collapse of values through their complacency. It is the next generation that must pay the price. The country\, now decimated\, is represented by a grotesque Chorus of women\, abandoned\, fearful\, resigned and bewildered. \n \nThe performance\nIn ancient art\, from sculpture and painting to poetry\, women are often depicted as symbols for their countries\, protecting their homelands as a mother protects her children. Male figures\, on the other hand\, take on the strategic management and leading policies. \nIn Maria Protopappa’s dramaturgical and directorial approach to “Andromache”\, Hermione and Andromache represent the ideals of their countries\, while Menelaus and Peleus represent politics and power. Women do not simply constitute femininity; they have been constructed by men to represent the ideal role of the country and society. Thus\, the Euripidean tragedy\, while speaking of a home\, is essentially concerned with the ethos and political management of a state in peacetime. \nEuripides’ language breaks the rules of the era and is transformed into spells that vibrate with physicality\, sensory memory and collective experiences. The director attempts to bring to light and transmit these precious and untranslatable elements not only verbally\, but also kinesiologically\, having an excellent group of Greek actors by her side. \nMaria Protopappa’s note\n“A woman prisoner of war and her child\, an illegitimate child of rape\, become a scandal in a small provincial town. Andromache’s insistence on surviving\, full of hope and expectations for the future\, and her courage to resist and speak out against the injustice she suffers\, upset the local people in power\, close houses\, break alliances and expose the inequalities of society. \nIn the most intense way\, Euripides highlights the arrogance of the powerful\, the illusion of superiority of the “civilised” Greeks over the “savage” barbarians\, revealing the fundamental injustices of their world. \nAndromache becomes a symbol of resistance against social and political injustices. Although she suffers mistreatment and oppression\, she refuses to succumb and remain silent. Her actions\, her persistence and her voice\, expose the status quo and overturn powerful social structures. The overthrow of expectations\, the breaking of taboos and the denunciation of the irreparable evil that comes from power\, become the driving force that changes the balance and brings Nemesis to the heart of society. \nRevealing the moral poverty of power\, Euripides does not stay on the surface; he digs deeper\, observing how corruption and violence turn against those responsible\, functioning as a natural\, divine intervention. When human justice fails\, Nemesis takes action\, restoring balance and the right of women to claim their place in the world regardless of social prejudices. \nIn “Andromache”\, the insistence on justice\, the need for recognition and the recognition of truth transcend social conventions\, revealing the gaps of power and its arrogance. Through the voice of Andromache\, Euripides calls us to recognise the true value of the human spirit\, endurance\, strength and justice\, which are always superior to the interests and contradictions of those in power.” \nARTISTIC & PRODUCTION CREDITS\nTranslation: G. SUMMARY:Periklis Kanaris - Naftodia
DESCRIPTION:Periklis Kanaris – Naftodia\nAndros International Festival\nSaturday\, August 2\, 2025\, 9:00 PM \nComposer and performer Pericles Kanaris has been recognized as one of the most important ambassadors of Greek music in the Diaspora. Not coincidentally\, the International New York Times recognised in his music a “Greek identity with a global sounds.” Through his multifaceted work (recordings\, concerts\, productions) in Europe and America\, he uniquely bridges the Greek sound and language with international musical trends\, developing a distinctive “dialogue” between great poets such as Constantine P. Cavafy\, Manos Eleftheriou\, and T. S. Eliot\, and acclaimed artists of the global music scene. \nIn the summer of 2025\, Pericles Kanaris will present a new series of songs titled Naftodia. Following his album “Aoratos”\, which features poetry by the great Greek poet Manos Eleftheriou\, the composer and performer collaborates with contemporary poets and lyricists. It is a tribute to Greek seafaring\, based on new poems set to music by the composer — including texts by important Greek poets as well as experiential lyrics from people belonging to the Greek nautical “family.” \nComing from families with a strong maritime tradition and having been part of the Greek diaspora for most of his life\, the creator is especially inspired by the relationship between seafaring and Greek diaspora. From ancient times to the modern era\, Greek shipping expertise enabled Greeks to use the sea as a bridge to new opportunities\, fostering a worldwide diaspora rooted in maritime tradition — far beyond the borders of the homeland. This played a decisive role in shaping both Greek identity and Hellenism overall. \nThe presentation of Naftodia in Andros holds special emotional significance for the composer\, as his mother’s entire family hails from the island\, and he himself has a deep personal connection to it\, visiting regularly without fail. \nPeriklis Kanaris will be joined by exceptional soloists with influences from the entire spectrum of the Greek and international music scene. Of particular significance is the participation of internationally renowned harmonica and accordion soloist\, Gary Schreiner. The brilliant New York-based musician will be the guest star of the evening\, and his presence is a generous offering from the Andros Society of USA\, which\, in this unique way\, is making its debut in the island’s cultural events as a Diaspora organization. The concert is also held with the kind support of exploreandros.gr and Golden Star Ferries. \nThe program will also feature beloved songs written on the same theme by renowned Greek composers\, performed with Periklis Kanaris’s orchestral vision. \nParticipants: \n• Erriketi Katsani: voice\n• Krystallia Gaitanou: viola\n• George Kostopoulos: double bass\n• Giwrgos Skarpelos: bouzouki\, laouto\, mandolin\, guitar\n• Dimitris Karpouzas: sound \nAdmission:\nGeneral admission: EUR 15\nDiscounted admission (students\, unemployed\, people with disabilities): EUR 12 \nPre-sale starts on 23rd June 2025 at www.ticketservices.gr. SUMMARY:Simon Stephens VANYA
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Alexander Raptotasios Cast: Yorgos Karamihos \nAcclaimed Greek actor Yorgos Karamihos performs Simon Stephens’ “VANYA” with resounding success.\nUnder the direction of Alexander Raptotasios\, Yorgos Karamihos takes on “VANYA”\, written by multi-award-winning Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time). The modern\, condensed version of Anton Chekhov’s famous play challenges an actor to play eight roles\, navigating between comedy and tragedy of characters who desperately want to change their lives. \n \nThe play was presented in London’s West End with Andrew Scott\, crowned with success and receiving rave reviews. Produced by the cultural organisation “Lykofos”\, the Greek version has been performed in the historic basement of the Art Theatre and is coming to Andros International Festival on Wednesday 30 July 2025. \n     \nIn the words of director Alexander Raptotasios: \n“How can we change our lives? This question is at the core of the play. Eight characters deal with the same issue in different ways\, and one actor embodies this dire need for change. For a different life. For love\, affection\, success\, money\, acceptance\, happiness. Characters who are trapped\, ridiculous\, tragic and absolutely contemporary; whom we may encounter within our family\, at the office\, in a bar or at the supermarket. People trapped in a place of consumption and abundance that hides a barren loop. A human purgatory. Nightmare and farce alike. Just like all plays that have stood the test of time.” \n \n \nIn the words of playwright Simon Stephens: \n“Chekhov’s plays should exist in this decade and this century. Chekhov loved theatre. Not libraries and museums\, but the backstage\, the spectators and the actors. The playwrights. The producers’ ingenious spirit. He would have watched our version with curiosity\, with a bottle of wine in one hand and his pen in the other. He might have been surprised to find out that 120 years later we’re working on a play he would have recognised. A play about sex\, love\, money and life. In a world similar to his own\, where money as usual runs out and everything seems unstable\, yet people continue to do remarkable and ridiculous things. We continue waking up with a hangover. We continue falling in love.” \n \nTranslation: Danae Loukaki\nSet design / Lighting: Marco Turcich\nCostume design: Marie-Cecile Inglesi\nMusic: Alexander Raptotasios\nAssistant director: Virginia Drakopoulou\nAssistant set designer: Mariza Soulioti\nProduction management: Konstantina Angeletou\nProduction organisation: Ksenia Kalantzi\nProduction assistant: Panoutsi Margelos\nPhotography: Angeliki Kokove\nProduction: Cultural organisation “Lykofos” – George Lykiardopoulos \nAdmission\nGeneral admission: EUR 17\nDiscounted admission (students\, unemployed\, people with disabilities): EUR 14 \nPre-sale starts on 23rd June 2025 at www.ticketservices.gr. SUMMARY:The BIRDS By Aristophanes
DESCRIPTION:What would happen if someone organised the birds so that they become bearers of a new reality? \nHaving directed the tragedies “The Persians” and “Prometheus Bound”\, Aris Biniaris returns to Andros Open-Air Theatre directing an ancient Greek comedy for the first time; on Friday 23 August he presents “The Birds” by Aristophanes. \n \nAlthough the plot of this outstanding comedy is fictional\, its theme is close to reality. “The Birds” present a new start\, which has to be made outside human society\, far from gluttony\, decay and corruption. \nOdysseas Papaspiliopoulos and Giorgos Chrysostomou take on the roles of Pisthetaerus and Euelpides\, accompanied by numerous exceptional actors; Michalis Valasoglou\, Stelios Iakovidis\, Thanasis Isidorou\, Tasos Korkos\, Kostas Koronaios\, Sofia Koulera\, Avgoustinos Koumoulos\, Maria Kirozi\, Errikos Miliaris\, Marios Panagiotou\, Kiriakos Salis\, Alexia Sapranidou\, Konstantina Takalou and Irini Tsellou will try to found their own ideal city in the heavens\, far away from people. \nThe plot\nDisappointed with the living conditions in their city\, two friends\, Pisthetaerus and Euelpides\, search for a new place where they can live peacefully and with joy. Their contact with the birds’ world will give them the idea to found a new city up in the heavens\, between the earth and the sky.\nWhile construction of the city is in progress\, uninvited visitors from the people’s world arrive demanding arbitrary authority and privileges. At the same time\, correspondents of the Olympian gods complain\, worried that sovereignty of the gods is contested as the new city prevents the smoke of sacrifices from arriving in heaven.\nWill Pisthetaerus and Euelpides\, together with the birds’ help\, manage to complete the construction of Nephelokokkygia (literally “cloud-cuckoo-land”)? How easy will it be to make their own utopia come true? \n \nThe performance\nDirector Aris Biniaris uses the element of ritual\, aiming to bring out the allegorical extensions of Aristophanes’ work. Music and movement give centre stage to human condition\, transformation and restoration of a cosmic justice.\nWhile human civilisation has reached a critical point\, the birds’ flying resembles a ceremony of initiation and reconnection of humankind with the natural world and with the unprecedented power that results from this relationship. \nARTISTIC & PRODUCTION CREDITS\nTranslation: Tasos Roussos\nDirection: Aris Biniaris\nDramaturgy – Adaptation: Elena Triantafyllopoulou – Aris Biniaris\nSet design – Costume: Paris Mexis\nMusical composition: Aleksandros Drakos Ktistakis\nMovement: Aleksandros Vardaxoglou\nLighting design: Vaggelis Moudrihas\nChorus masks: Dimitra Kaisari\n1st Assistant director: Nefeli Papanastasopoulou\n2nd Assistant director: Vaggelis Prassas\nAssistant to the set designer and costume: Alegia Papageorgiou\nCommunications & Press office: Maria Tsolaki\nAdvertising – Social media: Renegade Media\nProduction: Τεχνηχώρος Performing Acts\nPromo photography: Mariza Kapsabeli\n3D graphics: Erifyli Doukeli\nVideo promo: Thomas Palivos \nCast:\nPisthetaerus: Odysseas Papaspiliopoulos\nEuelpides: Giorgos Chrysostomou\nHoopoe: Kostas Koronaios\nOracle Man – Prometheus: Stelios Iakovidis\nPoet – Iris: Konstantina Takalou\nMeton – Heracles: Errikos Miliaris\nInspector – Poseidon: Marios Panagiotou\nInformer: Thanasis Isidorou\nChorus: Michalis Valasoglou\, Thanasis Isidorou\, Tasos Korkos\, Sofia Koulera\, Avgoustinos Koumoulos\, Maria Kirozi\, Kiriakos Salis\, Alexia Sapranidou\, Irini Tsellou \n~ In co-production with Athens Epidaurus Festival ~ \nADMISSION:\nGENERAL ADMISSION: € 23\nDISCOUNTED ADMISSION (UNIVERSITY STUDENTS\, UNEMPLOYED\, PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES): € 20 \nSTART TIME: 21:00

SUMMARY:DO-RE-MI-REDES KOPERNIKOS Group
DESCRIPTION:Standing out of the children’s theatre scene thanks to its inspiring performances\, music\, songs and scripts\, art group KOPERNIKOS has this year created a new music-theatrical performance based on the idea of an “artistic circus” alongside the rules of slapstick comedy; and it’s going on a wild tour all around Greece! \n \nDO-RE-MI-REDES takes the form of a musical with the liveliness of a live concert\, transforming the stage into an at times theatrical frenzy and at times a stage for wild singing and dancing! On stage\, five talented musician-actors perform songs\, develop orchestral themes\, improvise music and perform funny sketches\, while narrating the touching story of a beautiful friendship. This is a music group of friends\, each with their own special character\, who know how to create\, have fun and – most of all – overcome each difficulty! \n \n \n \nSUMMARY \n“Doremiredes is a wonderful band known all around the world for its ticklish melodies\, hopping rhythms and hilarious lyrics.\nBut has it always been like this? Of course not! In the beginning\, the band members didn’t even know how to play music!\nSo how were DOREMIREDES created? Had they always been friends or perhaps a mysterious serendipity of time and space united them forever?\nTheir fascinating story emerges by shedding light on the past\, while we’ll see all their rehearsals and exciting adventures that have made them who they are today: the world’s best band!” \nThe talented performers play multiple and diverse musical instruments on stage\, while they also engage in insightful gags and farces starring even young and old spectators! Along with the strong presence of music\, the performance doesn’t fall short of humor as well as interaction\, as spectators are often asked to actively participate by suggesting\, supporting\, playing music\, replying to questions and helping the heroes of the story to take the right decision. \nThe idea\, the script and the music was created by Aggelos Aggelou & Emi Sini\, widely acclaimed artists in the children’s theatre scene (founders of KOPERNIKOS group and awarded in Greece and abroad for their theatrical scripts\, books and music). The play is directed by the experienced Johnny O.\, while Alexis Kotsopoulos takes on the role of conductor. During the play we’ll listen to songs from the KOPERNIKOS group’s successful albums\, as well as many new melodies (orchestral and songs) as well as adaptations of popular children’s (and not only!) songs. \nARTISTIC & PRODUCTION CREDITS: \nStarring: Ilias Algar\, Alexis Kotsopoulos\, Giannis Mastrogiannis\, Marianna Papathanasiou\, Periklis Siountas \nIdea – Script: Aggelos Aggelou & Emi Sini\nDirection: Johnny O.\nLyrics: Emi Sini\nMusic – Arrangement: Aggelos Aggelou\nSet design – Costume: KOPERNIKOS group\nPoster: Kostas Theoharis\nPhotography: Christina Filaktopoulou\nVideo: Thomas Ginis\nProduced by: Katerina Mouhtaridi\, KOPERNIKOS group \nAbout KOPERNIKOS group:\nwww.kopernikos.gr\nhttps://www.facebook.com/omadakopernikos/\nhttps://www.youtube.com/user/omadakopernikos\nhttps://www.instagram.com/omadakopernikos/ \nADMISSION:\nGENERAL ADMISSION: € 12\nSTART TIME: 21:00

SUMMARY:Tebas Land By Sergio Blanco
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Vangelis Theodoropoulos\nNeos Kosmos Theatre\n\nThe play:\nA writer has been meeting Martin\, a 20-year old parricide\, for several months in jail. He wants to write a play based on the story of the young prisoner\, to whom he suggests performing himself on stage. When this is eventually prohibited by the ministry in charge\, the role is taken on by Federico\, a young actor who has been collaborating with the writer. Remarkably\, Sergio Blanco has these two roles performed by the same actor.\n\n\n\nFrench-Uruguayan Sergio Blanco\, one of the strongest contemporary voices of Spanish-language theatre\, delivers a contemporary study on male identity\, oppression\, violence and crime\, punishment and discrimination\, as well as the creative processes of music and theatre\, with references to the Oedipus Myth and Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment.\n\n\n\nVangelis Theodoropoulos has brought the best out of this multidimensional play; both critics and audience applaud Theodoropoulos’ direction for its exceptional pace and evocative atmosphere. The performance is also praised for the outstanding acting of Thanos Lekkas as the role of the Writer\, and Dimitris Kapouranis playing the double role of Martin/Federico\, whilst the shows have been continuously sold-out for the past two years.\n\nArtistic and Production Credits\nTranslation: Maria Chatziemmanouil\nDirection: Vangelis Theodoropoulos\nMusic: Stavros Gasparatos\nMovement: Ksenia Themeli\nSet Design: Kostas Politis\nCostume: Claire Bracewell\nLighting Design – Video: Apostolis Koutsianikoulis\nPhotography: Patroklos Skafidas\nAssistant Director: Thanos Papadogiannis\nCast: Thanos Lekkas\, Dimitris Kapouranis\nDuration: 105’\n\nADMISSION:\nGENERAL ADMISSION: € 18\nDISCOUNTED ADMISSION (UNIVERSITY STUDENTS\, UNEMPLOYED\, PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES): € 15\n\nSTART TIME: 21:00

SUMMARY:Aeschylus’ “The Suppliants”
DESCRIPTION:Sixty years after the first performance at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus\, Neos Kosmos Theatre in co-production with Art Theatre Karolos Koun presents Aeschylus’ “The Suppliants” directed by Marianna Kalbari. This is a poetic but deeply political play that gives centre stage to the contemporary issue of asylum in democratic societies\, especially when it comes to the persecution of women.\n\n\n\nThe first and only one of Aeschylus’ Danaid Tetralogy that has been preserved\, this play features a collective female character as the protagonist: the Chorus of fifty Danaids who run away from Libya and Egypt with their father Danaus\, seeking asylum in the city of Argos. Just like their ancestress Io\, who strove to escape the torture of a disturbing horsefly sent to her by her pursuer Hera\, the Danaids strive to flee king Aegyptus’ fifty sons who demand to forcibly marry them. The myth raises the issue of women’s identity and place in society\, while recounting the chronicle of the Hellenic tribe’s settling and predominance in the country of pre-hellenic Pelasgians.\nThe Danaids talk about the circumstances that force people to flee their land\, the immigrants’ harsh fate\, the value of justice and the principles of democracy. Above all\, they talk about Woman’s struggle against Man\, who demands to forcibly dominate her.\n\nThe performance redeemingly unites the voices of ancient Greek and today’s heroines through an impressive Chorus of fifteen young women led by Lena Papaligoura and Loukia Michalopoulou in the roles of Hypermnestra and Amymone.\n\nThe Chorus consists of members of the female choir Chóres\, new student actors of the Higher Drama School of Art Theatre Karolos Koun\, and acrobat dancers of “Ki omos kineitai” group (leading performer: Christina Sougioultzi).\n\nLydia Koniordou takes on the male role of Pelasgos\, king of the pre-hellenic Pelasgian tribe which is believed to have been matrilineal. The two roles representing patriarchal authority are played by Akis Sakellariou and Giannis Tsortekis.\n\nArtistic & Production Credits\nTranslation: Ioannis Griparis\nScript & Dramaturgy – Direction: Marianna Kalbari\nSet design – Costume: Christina Kalbari\nMusical composition: Charalambos Gogios\nChoreography: Christina Sougioultzi\nLighting design: Stella Kaltsou\nAssistant director: Marilena Moschou\nAssistant to the set designer: Kiriaki Forti\nAssistant to the costume designer: Katerina Kirtatou\nMusic coach: Irini Patsea\, Simela Emmanouilidou\nProduction coordination of CHÓRES choir: Veroniki Krikoni\nExecutive producer: Marina Gavriilidou\n\nCast (in alphabetical order): Lydia Koniordou (Pelasgos)\, Loukia Michalopoulou (Amymone)\, Lena Papaligoura (Hypermnestra)\, Akis Sakellariou (Danaus)\, Giannis Tsortekis (Herald of Aegyptus)\n\nLead dancer: Christina Sougioultzi\n\nLead CHÓRES vocalists (in alphabetical order): Eleni Vasilaki\, Konstantina Giannopoulou\, Giota Dimitrakopoulou\, Fani Likou\, Ioni Moschovakou\, Dafni Pagoulatou\, Eleni Pouliou\, Elina Stamopoulou\, Danai Stergiou\, Nikolaia Triantafyllou\n\nLead performers of the Higher Drama School of Art Theatre Karolos Koun (in alphabetical order): Nefeli Dodopoulou\, Mirto Kapoli\, Renia Kritikou\, Anna Morogianni\n\nA co-production of Neos Kosmos Theatre and Art Theatre Karolos Koun\n\nADMISSION:\nGENERAL ADMISSION: € 22\nDISCOUNTED ADMISSION (UNIVERSITY STUDENTS\, UNEMPLOYED\, PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES): € 18\n\nSTART TIME: 21:00

SUMMARY:20 Years of Encardia (Music Performance)
DESCRIPTION:Exactly 20 years ago\, Encardia introduced themselves to us with melodies and songs from the Greek-speaking regions of Southern Italy. They brought to Greece traditional dances from those regions; they taught us the steps; we endlessly danced at their performances; we cried with folk songs of love\, immigration\, labour and protest of the Greek-speaking communities; we sang with them in the local dialect (Grico); and we followed them through their journeys in the Italian South.\n\n\n\n20 years of Encardia; thousands of concerts throughout Greece and abroad\, two prominent music-theatrical productions\, seven digital albums and a documentary under the band’s belt. While their next step is always eagerly awaited\, they now bring us a new\, fresh and always electrifying performance consisting not only of their most well-known and loved repertoire\, but also playing traditional Greek songs along with their other songs. Prominently featuring the band’s beloved personal sound\, this performance is presented from another perspective; the perspective of a collective that has persisted and lasted for 20 years\, continuously extending its artistic boundaries.\n\n\nFrom Salento & Napoli’s tarantella and the immigration songs & their utopia\, to Vincenzo Kornaros’ Erotokritos and Greek folk dance Raikos\, as well as Yiannis Ritsos’ Vertigo of his renowned poem Moonlight Sonata… In the end\, the audience is swept away to the steps of tarantella\, the Mediterranean’s most vigorous dance.\n\nEncardia members on stage:\nNatalia Kotsani (vocals\, percussion)\nVangelis Papageorgiou (accordion\, harmonica\, vocals)\nMichalis Kontaxakis (guitar\, vocals)\nKostas Konstantatos (percussion\, mandolin\, vocals)\nGiorgos Ntanis (double bass\, vocals)\nKonstantina Kalkani (dance)\nAnastasia Drouga (dance)\nSound design: Pasxalis Kolentsis\n\nADMISSION:\nGENERAL ADMISSION: € 15\nSTART TIME: 21:00

SUMMARY:Eugene Ionesco’s play “Killing Game”
DESCRIPTION:Laiki Skini Theatre Group of Andros presents Eugene Ionesco’s play “Killing Game”\, directed by Andri Theodotou and Dimitris Degaitis. \n \n \nHaving had a strong presence in the Andros theatre scene for the past 14 years\, with 9 plays publicly performed\, this year the amateur actors of the troupe founded by Kostas Tsapekos dive into Ionesco’s black comedy –one of the greatest works of the Theatre of the Absurd. \nOne of the most prominent representatives of the Theatre of the Absurd\, Eugene Ionesco satirises the most of mundane situations in his plays\, while he also portrays loneliness and the insignificance of human existence. \nProvocative and rebellious\, the play begins in a city which starts getting wiped out by a sudden pandemic. The city’s inhabitants are confronted with tragicomic\, irrational situations. Killing Game explores the themes of symbolic and real death. According to Ionesco\, “the comedy is tragic\, and human tragedy is a comedy”. \nTranslation: Errikos Belies\nOriginal music: Nikos Psarianos\nMusical arrangement: Dimitris Degaitis \n \nStarring (in alphabetical order):\nMinas Goumas\, Vivi Daniolou\, Leonardos Dimas\, Olga Kokoti\, Katerina Kolida\, Giorgos Kolidas\, Giorgos Maganiotis\, Simona Margeti\, Varvara Patesta\, Elli Pertesi\, Kotsarinis Xristos\, Aggeliki Strati\, Efrosini Tridima \n \nAndros Open-Air Theatre\nWednesday 31st July 2024\nStart time: 21:00 \nAdmission by supporter vouchers: € 10\nThe supporter vouchers are available for sale at the Andros Open-Air Theatre box office and at Paraporti store.
