SUMMARY:Agamemnon by Aeschylus - Alaloum Amateur Troup of Andros
DESCRIPTION:Alaloum Amateur Troup of Andros\nNeither has it ever been\, nor is it today easy to approach the Oresteia trilogy.\nIts broad range\, dramatic power\, daring elimination of characters and the grandeur of Aeschylus’ poetry\, bestow awe and fear upon those who try to confront the play; because the poet at times leads us to situations we await and at times leads us to situations we do not even wish to think about.\nAgamemnon is the first part of this sole preserved trilogy.\nWho is King Agamemnon that returns triumphant from the Trojan War? Is he a militarist who did not hesitate to deceive his wife and sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia in order to remain in power? Or is he a leader who put his homeland above everything?\nWho is Queen Clytemnestra\, left behind in a patriarchal society trying to keep the Kingdom of Mycenae alive while being confronted by the plebs? Is she a resentful woman who murders her husband the King for her own satisfaction? Or is she an oppressed and deceived woman who goes to Avlida to attend her daughter’s wedding\, but returns to Mycenae with the girl’s sacrificed body? Is she justified to retaliate?\nWho is Aegisthus? Is he a coward lover hiding behind Clytemnestra’s skirts? Or is it a man who has been long concealing his hatred and avenges Agamemnon when he finds the chance?\nFinally\, what role does the Chorus play in this work? Is it the people who demand\, who oppose Queen Clytemnestra and threaten to reveal everything to Agamemnon? Or is it a rebellious mass that revolts against unjust authority? And which is the human condition after all; which is the fate of the common people under the domination of any ruler\, whether just or unjust?\nWe hope to assist in exploring the above questions with the utmost respect that befits the glorious ancient Greek playwright and the theatre that will host our performance.\n\nVasilis Pomonis (Agamemnon)\n\nArtistic & Production Credits\nTranslation: I.N. SUMMARY:Oedipus at Colonus by Sophocles
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets here \nOedipus at Colonus by Sophocles \nDirected by Giorgos Skevas \nAncient Greek playwright Sophocles’ emblematic tragedy Oedipus at Colonus is performed this summer at Andros Open-Air Theatre. The play stars Dimitris Katalifos\, who is accompanied by talented actors Christos Chatzipanagiotis\, Angeliki Papathemeli\, Alexandra Aidini\, Maximos Moumouris\, Christos Sapountzis and Giorgos Nousis\, under Giorgos Skevas’ direction. \n \nThe play \nOedipus at Colonus is Sophocles’ last play\, performed for the first time five years after the playwright’s death. The play describes the end of Oedipus\, former king of Thebes. \nOld Oedipus\, who is now blind and exiled\, arrives at the Athenian village of Colonus\, led by his daughter Antigone. He sits on a rock in the sacred grove of Eumenides\, but a villager asks him to leave because that ground is holy. Oedipus refuses because\, according to the oracle he has received\, this will be the place of his eternal rest. \nThe dweller asks the village elders to decide on Oedipus’ situation. They sympathise with the old man\, but when they discover his identity they are horrified and order him to leave their land immediately. Oedipus invokes Athenian hospitality and asks to see Theseus\, king of Athens\, because he bears a great gift for him. In the meantime\, Ismene\, Oedipus’ other daughter\, arrives unexpectedly bringing the news from Thebes: Oedipus’ sons\, Eteocles and Polynices\, are on the verge of a civil war\, each claiming authority and the throne of Thebes. Moreover\, a new oracle states that whoever has Oedipus on his side\, whether alive or dead\, they will be the one to win the war. When Theseus arrives\, Oedipus pleads with him for protection for as long as he is alive\, and asks to be buried on the ground of Athens at the time of his death. Valuing Oedipus\, Theseus pledges to honour both his requests and assures him that he is safe. \nCreon storms in the scene\, announcing that he has arrived on behalf of all Theban dwellers in order to convince Oedipus to return to his homeland\, Thebes. When Creon realises that his words don’t persuade Oedipus\, but infuriate him instead\, he resorts to violence to achieve his aim… \n \nDirector’s note \nThe angelic and black light\, written in the last part of poet Giorgos Seferis’ work Kihli\, is the light that blind Oedipus “sees”. It is Oedipus’ devastation and vindication at once\, his unresolved passage to another space\, the invisible stones of Eumenides forest which will welcome and swallow him. The performance brings to the forefront the ambiguous suspense of a fate-stricken hero’s end. How can this tension between right and wrong\, between acceptance and rejection of fate\, be depicted on stage? Sophocles’ words – the words uttered by his heroes Oedipus\, Theseus\, Antigone\, Ismene\, Polynices and Creon – do not accept any conclusive separation of right from wrong or sacred from blasphemous. These words become an eternal place\, an eternal oracle\, through the music of the bodies. It is these words and their deep poetic oracle power that the performance seeks to set free. \nGiorgos Skevas \nTranslation: Chryssa Prokopaki\, Thanos Tsaknakis\nDirection: Giorgos Skevas\nDramaturgy: Giorgos Skevas\, Chryssa Prokopaki\nSet – Costume: Lili Pezanou\nMusic: Simi Tsilali\nLighting: Lefteris Pavlopoulos\nMovement: Damiano Ottavio Bigi\nPhotography: Patroklos Skafidas\nTrailer: Michael Mavromoustakos\nSocial Media: Renegade\nLegal advisor: Filio Kastranta\nAssistant to the director: Giannis Savouidakis\nAssistant to the costume designer: Charis Souliotis\nProduction assistants: Vangelis Vogiatzis\, Ksenia Kalantzi\nExecutive producer: Katerina Berdeka\nProducer: Giorgos Likiardopoulos \nCast: Dimitris Katalifos\, Christos Chatzipanagiotis\, Angeliki Papathemeli\, Alexandra Aidini\, Maximos Moumouris\, Christos Sapountzis\, Giorgos Nousis among a cast of 14 actors \nProduced by Lykofos cultural organisation in co-production with Athens Epidaurus Festival \n \nTICKET PRE-SALE: www.ticketservices.gr\nADMISSION\nGENERAL ADMISSION: €20\nDISCOUNTED ADMISSION (UNIVERSITY STUDENTS\, UNEMPLOYED\, PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES): €17 \nΤετάρτη 23 Αυγούστου\nΘέατρο: «Οιδίπους επί Κολωνώ» του Σοφοκλή\, σκην. SUMMARY:Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets here \nSophocles’ Oedipus Rex Directed by Simos Kakalas \nOne of the most emblematic ancient Greek tragedies\, Sophocles’ “Oedipus Rex” will be presented at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus during the Athens Epidaurus Festival\, and goes on tour all over Greece. Directed by Simos Kakalas and produced by Iasmos Drama School\, the play features Yiannis Stankoglou and Marilita Lambropoulou in the leading roles of Oedipus and Jocasta respectively. \n \nThe protagonists are accompanied by exceptional performers Yiannis Dalianis\, Christos Malakis\, Giorgos Amoutzas\, Simos Kakalas\, Panagos Ioakim\, along with five other remarkable actors. Live music is performed on stage by the play’s composer Fotis Siotas.\nThe play has been translated by Giorgos Blanas. Giannis Katranitsas is in charge of the set design\, Sofia Paschou takes care of the movement\, and Alekos Giannaros is behind the lighting. The masks\, which constitute a crucial element of the play\, have been designed by Martha Foka. \nOedipus is confronted with his fate\, which he has been trying to escape since his birth. The prophecy that was given to his father Laius\, King of Thebes\, is confirmed in the worst way. Oedipus unknowingly kills his father\, marries his mother Jocasta and ascends to the throne of Thebes. The tragic truth does not take long to reveal itself\, confirming that humans cannot escape their fate. \n“Oedipus Rex” is one of the most beloved and most performed ancient Greek plays both in Greece and globally\, conveying the Greek spirit and its timeless messages across all humanity. \nSimos Kakalas’ note \nNever before in the history of humankind have we seen so far into the universe and so deep into humanity. Too often\, when on the verge of a disaster we realise that the evil we fight against is\, in fact\, ourselves. Oedipus signifies humankind standing in front of a mirror. Having found the culprit\, it is imperative for Oedipus to make a choice\, even at the last moment\, even after having already committed the gravest error. This performance is seen as a purgative ritual; a group of masked elders constitutes the Chorus which grieves and anguishes\, while revealing the tragic figures of Oedipus\, Jocasta\, Tiresias and Creon. \nOedipus Rex \nARTISTIC & PRODUCTION CREDITS\nTranslation: Giorgos Blanas\nDirection: Simos Kakalas\nDramaturgy: Elena Triantafyllopoulou\nSet design – Costume: Giannis Katranitsas\nMusic: Fotis Siotas\nMovement: Sofia Paschou\nLighting: Alekos Giannaros\nMasks: Martha Foka\nAssistant to the set designer: Sofia Theodoraki\nMake-up artist: Sissy Petropoulou\nPhotography: Manos Ksirouchakis\nSocial media: Ιdeation\nGraphic design: Giannis Stamatopoulos\nProduction delivery: Kart Productions – Maria Ksanthopoulidou\nProduced by: Iasmos Drama School \nCAST\nOedipus: Yiannis Stankoglou\nJocasta: Marilita Lambropoulou\nCreon: Yiannis Dalianis\nTiresias: Christos Malakis\nMessenger: Giorgos Amoutzas\nSecond Messenger: Simos Kakalas\nServant: Panagos Ioakim \nChorus (in alphabetical order): Markos Gettos\, Panagos Ioakim\, Simos Kakalas\, Apostolos Kamitsakis\, Augoustinos Koumoulos\, Giorgos Loksas\, Paulos Paulidis \nLive musician on stage: Fotis Siotas \nTicket pre-sale: www.ticketservices.gr \nhttps://youtu.be/cjhKaRIQVh4 \nTicket pre-sale: www.ticketservices.gr \nADMISSION\nGENERAL ADMISSION: € 22\nDISCOUNTED ADMISSION (UNIVERSITY STUDENTS\, UNEMPLOYED\, PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES): € 17

SUMMARY:Antigone by Jean Anouilh
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets here \nDirected by: Maria Protopappa\nAfter Anouilh’s Antigone was first presented at the Greek Art Theatre\, Maria Protopappa approaches the play once again\, both as a director and performer\, further evolving her initial vision. Undertaking to utter herself the biggest part of Antigone’s words\, the director attempts to comment on the signifier and signified of the heroine’s existence. Does Antigone exist? To what extent is the desire/need that gives birth to Antigone real?\n\n\nΦωτογραφία: Μαριλένα Αναστασιάδου \n\n\nThe performance features actors Christos Stergioglou\, Giannis Tsortekis\, Dimitris Mamios\, Dimitris Margaritis and Maria Protopappa. The latter takes on the play’s direction as well as the role of Antigone\, which she shares on stage with emerging actress Ilektra Barouta.\n\nAntigone as a mythical figure has been posing a captivating riddle throughout the centuries; what urges her to confront authority? Does this confrontation justify her life’s sacrifice? Are there any mitigating circumstances for Creon\, whom Antigone opposes? How much does each society need the presence of an Antigone and for which reasons\, except the obvious ones?\n\nAncient Greek playwright Sophocles was the first to take Antigone’s myth on stage in 441 BC\, while French dramatist Jean Anouilh reshaped it during World War II.\n\nCreon issues a law to prohibit the burial of Antigone’s brother\, Polynices\, because he rallied an army and attacked his brother Eteocles and the town of their ancestors. Antigone opposes this order and confronts Creon. The power of her uttered words\, their potential ability to shape realities or be perceived as reality\, is the main claim of this play’s reading.\n\nSince Anouilh’s Antigone premiere in 1944\, the play has been presented on theatrical stages all over the world\, always sparking heated discussions. In Greece it was performed for the first time in 1946-1947 at the Greek Art Theatre (Theatro Technis) under Karolos Koun’s direction\, starring renowned actress Elli Lambeti. This summer the play is travelling to Andros Open-Air Theatre for a unique performance under the starry skies.\n\nDirector’s note\nIn extreme historical circumstances like the ones we live in today\, which include cosmogenic changes that we CANNOT be aware of before they are complete; during these abrupt Transitions-Mutations of humankind\, the framework and need for the collective ARE CRUSHING individuals and their public character. We abruptly transition to technologically and politically pinned down humans who get deprived of their public discourse\, democracy and control of themselves and their lives –let alone their individual freedom and privacy\, since they are “voluntarily” exposed with everybody\, in the eyes of everybody.\n\nTheir value derives from the fact that the events which are supposed to have occurred at a given time in the distant past\, constitute a structure that remains unchanged in the present\, the past and the future (Claude Lévi-Strauss).\n\nAnouilh invites his audience to reflect on the meaning of life and deny every form of compromise. His play belongs to his Pieces Noires (Black Works)\, which are filled with irony and sarcasm. He has found a way to laugh at misfortune: “My plays are mostly Molieresque. Thanks to Molière\, French theatre isn’t bleak. Just like soldiers at war\, we laugh with our misery and terror”.\n\nIf it were easy to decide which side is right or wrong\, we wouldn’t be talking about tragedy. The value of tragedy doesn’t lie in the clash between good and evil or innocence and guilt\, but in a conflict of moral values and political views in which it is difficult for the average person to adopt a clear stance. Pertaining to the question “Is Antigone’s sacrifice justified?”\, Sophocles’ and Anouilh’s plays do not give a definite and conclusive answer.\n\nARTISTIC AND PRODUCTION CREDITS\nTranslation: Marios Ploritis\nDirection – Dramaturgy: Maria Protopappa\nSet – Costume: Eva Nathena\nMovement: Katerina Fotiadi\nMusic: Lolek\nLighting: Melina Mascha\nAssistants to the director: Dimitris Stavropoulos\, Orestis Stavropoulos\nAssistant to the costume designer: Elsa Gogoglou\nPromo photography: Roula Revi\nLive performance photography: Marilena Anastasiadou\nPromo photography make-up artist: Sissi Petropoulou\nPromo photography jewellery: Noilence\nPerformance video-trailer: Michael Mavromoustakos\nGraphic design – Poster design: Giannis Stamatopoulos\n\nCommunications: Anzelika Kapsabeli\nProduction delivery: Kart Productions – Maria Ksanthopoulidou\n\nCAST: Christos Stergioglou\, Giannis Tsortekis\, Dimitris Mamios\, Dimitris Margaritis\, Ilektra Barouta\, Maria Protopappa\n\nProduced by Kart Productions in co-production with Karolos Koun Art Theatre\n\nVideo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Il7mliqp1ms\n\nDuration: 110 minutes\n\nTICKET PRE-SALE: WWW.TICKETSERVICES.GR\n\nADMISSION\nGENERAL ADMISSION: €20\nDISCOUNTED ADMISSION (UNIVERSITY STUDENTS\, UNEMPLOYED\, PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES): €15\n\nSupported by\n\nThe performance is subsidised by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports\n\nMEDIA REVIEW QUOTES\n\n“An actor of unique performative merit\, Giannis Tsortekis revealed a polysemous Creon with prestige\, expressive power and a little humanity and sensitivity…”\nRea Grigoriou\, Kathimerini\n\n“Significant renditions\, profound direction on the French dramatist’s ironic work and a performance that dares to follow a path not necessarily fertile\, but which is here rewarded by the result.”\nTonia Karaoglou\, Athinorama\n\n“Maria Protopappa constructed a performance carefully studied in every detail\, focusing on both acting and symbolism.”\nOlga Sella\, Athensvoice\n\n“A performance of exceptional dramaturgy\, direction and acting\, which addresses concepts such as human communication\, authority\, coming of age and the loss of childhood innocence. SUMMARY:At the Edge of Romanticism
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets here \nGiorgos Emmanouil Lazaridis (piano)\nChristos Grimpas (cello) \nClassical music concert with world-famous pianist and composer Giorgos Emmanouil Lazaridis\, together with Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra’s renowned cellist Christos Grimpas. Having given dozens of joint musical performances in Greece and around the world\, these two inseparable friends will once more enchant their audience with a unique tribute to early 20th century music. The programme features two emblematic musical works by Sergei Rachmaninov and Modest Mussorgsky\, highly demanding on both a technical and a performative level. \n \nPart 1\nSergei Rachmaninov: Sonata for Cello and Piano\nSergei Rachmaninov’s famous Sonata in G minor for Cello and Piano was completed in 1901. Rachmaninov composed the sonata in such a way so that piano is not complementary to cello. Themes are introduced by piano\, but are extended and enriched by cello. Rachmaninov dedicated this work to Anatoliy Brandukov\, who carried out his first musical execution in Moscow. \nPart 2\nModest Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition for Solo Piano\nOne of the most famous suites for piano by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky\, this composition became widely known through orchestrations and adaptations carried out by numerous musicians throughout the years –Maurice Ravel’s adaptation perhaps being the most well-known one. In this musical feast\, the audience will have the opportunity to wander in a gallery with their ears\, since Mussorgsky uses music as a sonic brush to describe paintings. \nADMISSION\nGENERAL ADMISSION: EUR 15\nFriday 11.08.2023 @21:00 \nTICKET PRE-SALE: WWW.TICKETSERVICES.GR \n \nAbout the Artists \nGiorgos Emmanouil Lazaridis is a multi-talented\, widely recognised personality\, counting 30 years of continuous creative presence in the global music scene as a soloist\, composer\, educator and pioneer in the foundation and development of new cultural institutions. SUMMARY:Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Dario Fo
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets here \nThe ultimate talk of the town of the past years is going on a big tour all over Greece! \nDirected by Yiannis Kakleas\nStarring Panos Vlahos \nFollowing two overwhelmingly sold-out seasons and numerous theatrical awards\, the “performance of the year” is going on a big summer tour\, after having astounded 140\,000 spectators and having been the talk of the town in Athens and Thessaloniki for the past two years. \nThis dazzling play\, this highly in-demand theatre ticket\, is travelling to selected cities all over Greece\, giving theatre lovers the chance to enjoy a performance with demonic energy\, songs\, live music and caustic humour brought to the stage by a group of actors who play\, dance\, sing and satirise their own current reality through the play’s story. \nUnder the direction of Yiannis Kakleas\, actors Panos Vlahos\, Foivos Rimenas\, Ifigenia Asteriadi\, Konstantinos Magklaras\, Panagiotis Katsolis and Stelios Petsos introduce us to Dario Fo’s caustic and denouncing universe! \n \n \nDario Fo\, this ingenious dramaturgist\, based on real events that took place in Italy during turbulent times\, wrote an astonishingly denouncing satire about violence\, idiocy\, the arbitrariness of authority\, fabricated lies\, and purposely “blind” justice which serves a corrupted system. \n \nTHE PLAY \nA witty and timely comedy strips authority bare while presenting the “compelling” evidence used to incriminate someone. An open window on the sixth floor can become a solution when self-composure is lost and death will be simply archived as “accidental”! \nIn his play\, Dario Fo manages to uncover/expose the murder of “anarchist” railroad worker Giuseppe Pinelli\, committed by the Italian police. Using satire and irony\, the playwright denounces the tragic event and decries power abuse. Even though this play was written long ago to criticise the Italian justice system’s arbitrary authority and government corruption\, it’s easy for today’s spectators to notice many similarities with current Greek society. \nIn Dario Fo’s words: “The play has been performed with continuous success ever since it was written; perhaps because bloodshed\, bombings\, big words and great scandals keep increasing every now and then… Always being caused by the same systems that organise violence and cannot tolerate the people who refuse to obey.” \n \nTHE PERFORMANCE \nThe play\, the plot and Dario Fo’s controversial views constitute the foundation on which we humorously comment on our own reality in our performance\, following the playwright’s opinion:\n“I don’t consider my plays to be complete\, but open to continuous differentiations. Even today\, whoever performs a play of mine anywhere in the world should be aware that my scripts are a fluid material\, able to be adapted and shaped in the form of one’s own reality\, able to include references that will make the theatre’s parquet get angry\, ponder and laugh.” \n \nTaking Dario Fo’s play as our starting point\, our performance follows the footprints of an archetypal Jester; an ever relevant funny figure who poses a threat to every authority and stereotype. We begin from his birth\, continue to his journeys in space and time\, and end up in the here and now. \nARTISTIC & PRODUCTION CREDITS \nDirection – Dramaturgy: Yiannis Kakleas\nSet design: Ilenia Douladiri / Yiannis Kakleas\nCostume: Ilenia Douladiri\nMusic composer: Vaios Prapas\nLyrics: Panos Vlahos\nChoreography: Aggeliki Trombouki\nLighting: Stella Kaltsou\nAssistants to the director: Lito Triantafyllidou / Rea Samaropoulou\nAssistant to the costume designer: Ioanna Kalavrou\nAssistant to the lighting designer: Stevi Koutsothanasi\nPress office – Communications: Maria Tsolaki\nPromotion – Social Media: Renegade Media / Vasilis Zarkadoulas \nProduction: ΧΩΡΟΣ ΤΕΧΝΗΣ \nStarring: Panos Vlahos\, Foivos Rimenas\, Ifigenia Asteriadi\, Konstantinos Magklaras\, Stelios Petsos\, Panagiotis Katsolis\nLive musician on stage: Vaios Prapas \nAdmission: General admission €20 \nSOLD OUT

He wouldn’t let it out of his sight\, wouldn’t trust it to strangers’ hands. And because back then one could find watermelons only in summer time\, and as the film’s time-worn watermelon was rotting day by day\, with its juices flowing out of its flesh\, Theodoros had become its nurse\, patching up its holes with adhesive tape and bandage.\nAn unforgettable image.\nIt was the times when all colleagues gave a hand for each other’s film\, took on roles\, played extras\, carried furniture\, all for the sake of cinema.\nIn the three-day tribute “Old Friends – First Images”\, Andros Festival in collaboration with Andros Film Club will present short films of beloved directors at the welcoming and cosy Ciné Avli venue.\nEvery evening we’ll be sharing stories from the then young colleagues’ madness and anguish over a good shot.\nToday\, most of them are no longer alive.\nOn the white screen we’ll resurrect and honour their first steps in cinematography; images that kept the promises for future remarkable cinematic and televisual creations.\nPersonally\, I can’t wait.” \nSCREENING SCHEDULE\nThursday 3rd August 2023\nMacedonian Wedding\, directed by Takis Kanellopoulos (1960\, 29’)\nTheraic Dawn\, directed by Stavros Tornes & Kostas Sfikas (1967\, 25’)\nLetters from America\, directed by Lakis Papastathis (1972\, 19’)\nA Letter from Charles Leroy\, directed by Lambros Liaropoulos (1965\, 10’)\nLast Stop\, Kreuzberg\, directed by Giorgos Karypidis (1975\, 22’) \nFriday 4th August 2023\nAcropolis of Athens\, directed by Roviros Manthoulis (1960\, 28’)\nOikopedo (Plot of Land)\, directed by Thodoros Marangos (1971\, 13’)\nAthinai\, directed by Eva Stefani (1995\, 40’)\nBetty\, directed by Dimitris Stavrakas (1979\, 33’) \nSaturday 5th August 2023\n100 Hours of May\, directed by Dimos Theos & Fotos Lambrinos (1963\, 28’)\nGiannis and the Road\, directed by Tonia Marketaki (1967\, 20’)\nAnahorisi (Departure)\, directed by Christos Paligiannopoulos (1968\, 13’)\nThe Thief\, directed by Pantelis Voulgaris (1965\, 20’)\nThe Broadcast\, directed by Theodoros Angelopoulos (1968\, 23’) \nFilms were collected and legal licences were obtained by Taksiarhis Deligiannis and Vasilis Tsiouvaras. \nWe warmly thank the following for authorising the screenings and providing the films: \nGREEK FILM CENTRE THE GREEK FILM ARCHIVE FOUNDATION HELLENIC FILM ACADEMY\nPhoebe Angelopoulou\nIvonni Maltezou\nRania Brilaki\nFotos Lambrinos\nKostis Theos\nThodoros Marangos\nTzannetos Komineas\nDimitris Stavrakas\nGiorgos Liaropoulos\nEva Stefani\nChristos Paligiannopoulos\nKonstantinos Kanellopoulos\nPAPANDREOU S.A.\nNikos Theodosiou\nDimitris Spirou\nKiriakos Chatzimihailidis \nINFO\n“Old Friends – First Images” \nThursday August 3\, 2023 – Friday August 4\, 2023 – Saturday August 5\, 2023\nCiné Avli of Andros Film Club\, Chora Andros\n9th International Andros Festival \nScreening start time: 21:00 \nAdmission\nAndros Film Club support vouchers: EUR 5\nSupport vouchers for each screening are available at Ciné Avli on the day of the screening\, 1 hour before the start time.

SUMMARY:The Little Tailor of Words
DESCRIPTION:For ticket reservations CLICK HERE \nAndros Festival and the Social Cooperative Enterprise of Andros present the theatrical play “The Little Tailor of Words” by Antonis Papatheodoulou. The play will be performed by the ΜΙΚRΟS ΝΟΤΟS theatre group on Saturday August 20\, 2022\, at 20:30. \n\n“…Once upon a time\, a unique tailor lived in a town so little that it resembled a village. The tailor was unique not only because he was the only one in town\, but also because he made clothes out of words! He carefully picked the words for each town-dweller and made clothes that kept people warm in the winter and cool in the summer. However\, as time went by\, the town grew bigger\, its dwellers became hurried and forgetful and they forgot about the tailor. Once\, a very harsh winter came and people couldn’t warm with any of their new clothes. Then they remembered the tailor\, who knitted words so beautifully\, and they got warm again. Because\, after all\, it’s words that warm up\, cool down and comfort every heart…” \n\n“The Little Tailor of Words” by Antonis Papatheodoulou\, has been performed more than 300 times and was sold-out during the 2019-2020 season at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation\, during the 2021 summer tour and also at the Anesis Theatre! \nIt is a contemporary fairytale that has won the hearts of both children and adults. Caring\, touching and more timely than ever before\, it talks about the power of words\, the need for human communication\, and the love\, consolation and warmth that are offered by words. \nThe theatrical group Mikros Notos brings to life before our eyes a book beloved by young and old alike. Using pure ingredients –live music\, movement\, interaction\, pantomime– the group creates a handmade performance as warm and colourful as the tailor’s blanket\, which covered and warmed up all of the town-dwellers in the end. \nARTISTIC & PRODUCTION CREDITS\nAuthor: Antonis Papatheodoulou\nTheatrical adaptation – Song lyrics: Tina Giotopoulou\nDirection: Giorgos Tzavaras\nArt direction – Text editing – Assistant director: Chryssa Diamantopoulou\nOriginal music: Nikos Platirachos\nVisual design – Costume: Georgia Bourda\nMovement: Anna Anousaki\nCast: Nikos Axiotis\, Dimitris Giannis\, Elsa Loubardia\nLive music: The Mikros Notos group\nRhythm design & teaching: Giorgos Tzavaras\nSong teaching: Nikos Platirachos\nScientific design of the play’s interactive parts: Flora Spirou\nGraphic design: k2design\nPress officer: Evangelia Skrobola\nProduction planning: Chryssa Diamantopoulou\nProduced by: MIKROS NOTOS Civil Non-Profit Company \n \n➤ Saturday 20.08.2022\, 20:00 \nPerformance duration: 65 minutes\nAdmission: €10

SUMMARY:Euripides Medea
DESCRIPTION:For ticket reservations CLICK HERE \n“A deep and uncurable wound\nis love’s hatred” \nAimilios Chilakis and Manolis Dounias direct one of the most heart-wrenching plays of global theatre. The two directors reimagined and adapted Medea according to the ancient tragedy paradigm\, where all roles are played by three actors. Athina Maximou\, Aimilios Chilakis and Anastasis Roilos take on the roles of the play (Medea\, Jason\, Creon\, Tutor\, Aegeus\, Nurse\, Messenger)\, while the Chorus features two exceptional performers: Giota Negka and Mirto Alikaki. \n \nThis emblematic play of ancient Greek literature is presented with a new translation by Giorgos Blanas and original live music by Dimitris Kamarotos. Eva Nathena is in charge of the set and costume design\, Patricia Apergi takes care of the movement and Nikos Vlasopoulos is behind the lighting. The Chorus consists of some of the most talented actors and dancers of the new generation: Petrina Giannakou\, Maira Gravani\, Alexandra Drandaki\, Giorgos Zigouris\, Eleftheria Kontogeorgi\, Erietta Manouri\, Vasilis Boutsikos\, Giorgos Nousis\, and Dafni Stathatou.\nThe Chorus is accompanied on stage by the composer Dimitris Kamarotos. \n \nIn Medea\, love overthrows logic\, transforms people\, besieges even the most sacred relationships such as the one between mother and child. Love betrayal turns into implacable hatred and directs everyone’s fate. Medea –who betrayed her family\, stole the Golden Fleece and abandoned her homeland for Jason’s sake– is isolated in Corinth\, among people who consider her to be a foreigner\, a barbarian. When Jason informs her that he will marry Glauce\, the daughter of Creon\, king of Corinth\, hurt and disdained Medea is transformed into a dark and vengeful beast. “Women may not bear to hear about battles and swords\, but when their love is besieged\, one cannot find a more war-hungry soul.”\, in the words of Euripides\, who has Medea eliminate her young rival by sending her poisoned gifts that cause her horrifying death. Betrayed Medea does not stop there\, though. She commits the most unthinkable of acts: she murders her children with her own hands. \n“Her inner beast has been unleashed and I don’t know\nhow it will appease until it satisfies its thirst for blood.” \nMedea kills her children not simply to take revenge on Jason\, but mainly in order to save them from her enemies’ hands; to prevent authority from murdering them. This is why\, despite her atrocious action\, Euripides ultimately glorifies her instead of punishing her. \n \nCAST\nMEDEA | Athina Maximou\nJASON – CREON – TUTOR | Aimilios Chilakis\nAEGEUS – NURSE – MESSENGER | Anastasis Roilos\nCHORUS MAIN PERFORMERS | Mirto Alikaki\, Giota Negka\nMUSICIAN – CHORUS PERFORMER | Dimitris Kamarotos \nCHORUS\nPetrina Giannakou\nMaira Gravani\nAlexandra Drandaki\nGiorgos Zigouris\nEleftheria Kontogeorgi\nErietta Manouri\nVasilis Boutsikos\nGiorgos Nousis\nDafni Stathatou \nARTISTIC & PRODUCTION CREDITS\nTranslation: Giorgos Blanas\nDirection – Adaptation: Aimilios Chilakis\, Manolis Dounias\nOriginal music – Teaching of choral odes: Dimitris Kamarotos\nSet design – Costume: Eva Nathena\nMovement – Choreography: Patricia Apergi\nLighting: Nikos Vlasopoulos\nSpeech therapy – Speech training: Ilias Papathanasiou \nAssistant to the directors: Nikos Tsimaras\nAssistant to the set designer and costume: Dafni-Chrisi Fotinatou\nAssistant to the choreographer: Emmanoura Sakellari\nPhotography: Marilena Anastasiadou\nMake-up artist: Sissy Petropoulou \nExecutive producer: Efi Panourgia\nProduction delivery: Giannis Koulouris\nTour manager: Alexandra Kouzouna\nSocial Media – Marketing: Renegade Media / Vasilis Zarkadoulas\nProduced by: HOROS Theatre Company\nPress Office of HOROS Theatre Company: Maria Tsolaki | +30 6974767890 | mtsolaki@gmail.com\nCommunications: Anastasia Kamvisi | +30 6944 83 15 77| anastaz.zouzi@gmail.com \n \nFriday 19.08.2022\, 21:00\nStarting time: 21.00\nAdmission: €17 & €20\nTicket pre-sale:\nwww.viva.gr/tickets/theater/tour/mideia/

SUMMARY:Halepas
DESCRIPTION:For ticket reservations CLICK HERE \nHalepas\nConcept & Stage Direction: Argyro Chioti\nLibretto: The Boy\nOnassis Stegi \n \n \nYannoulis Halepas\, that ascetic figure of Greek sculpture – whom some called “the Auguste Rodin of Greece”\, others “a saint\, a madman\, a genius\, an artist cursed” – encounters the gaze of Argyro Chioti and the words of The Boy.\n“Perhaps you were right after all – things would be better had I never dreamed of the sculpture that would save the world” \nFrom his birth in the village of Pyrgos on the island of Tinos – amid the marble slabs and plentiful dust of his family’s stone cutting workshop – through to his legendary sculpture of the “Sleeping Maiden” that stands inside the First Cemetery of Athens. And from his breakdown\, his committal to a psychiatric hospital\, and his many years spent in isolation up in the mountains of his island\, through to his spiritual awakening and the sweeping renaissance that characterized his old age. As he himself said: “The new (old man) Halepas outdid the old (young man).” \nThrough dream-like illusions\, Argyro Chioti walks to the difficult path that was the sculptor’s life\, always between silence and absurdity\, stillness and creativity\, presenting the contemporary music tragedy “Halepas” with a libretto by The Boy\, music by Jan Van Angelopoulos\, set designs by Efi Birba and an exceptional ensemble cast. \nHALEPAS’ habitat\, a peculiar greenhouse with scattered trees\, creates a natural cypress grove. All this forms part of a soundscape dominated by Tinos’ winds\, and the rumble and din of marble carving as they were pinned in the mind of Halepas to awaken our nightmares and dreams. \n“What does a mental breakdown involve today? How many people around us can’t handle ‘normality’?” asks Chioti. “Observe Halepas’ life: everything hanging by a thread. And you also see it in your own life\, what it means to find yourself in a weak moment and what it means to have someone say\, ‘Come on\, you can do it’.” \n \nArtistic & Production credits\nLibretto: The Boy\nConcept & Stage Direction: Argyro Chioti\nMusic Composition & Sound Design: Jan Van Angelopoulos\nScenic installation & Costumes Design: Efi Birba\nLighting Design: Tasos Palaioroutas\nPhysical Training: Chara Kotsali\nCollaboration in Rehearsals (Performer): Aliki Stenou\nDramaturgical consultant: Efthimis Theou\nArtistic Collaborator: Nefeli Gioti\nMusical training consultant: Katia Molfesi\nTechnical Sound Supervisor: Nikos Kollias\nCostumes creation: SANDI COUTOURE atelier\n1st Assistant to Director: Katerina Kotsou\nSet Designer Assistant: Vassia Liri\nCostumes Designer Assistant: Alexandros Garnavos\n2nd Assistant to Director: Konstantinos Kardakaris\nWith: Argyro Chioti\, Georgina Chryskioti\, Efthimis Theou\nChara Kotsali\, Antonis Miriagos\, Giorgos Nikopoulos\, Dimitris Sotiriou\, Aliki Stenou\nLine Producer: Maria Dourou / VASISTAS\nProduction Onassis Stegi\nCoproduction ERT Emilia Romagna Teatro (Italy) \n“HALEPAS” tour is supported by Onassis Stegi’s “Outward Turn” Cultural Export Program \n \nRead More \nYannoulis Halepas was born into a famous family of marble sculptors on the Greek island of Tinos. At the age of 24\, he created the most famous grave monument in modern Greek art – the “Sleeping Maiden”\, found in the First Cemetery of Athens. Directly after that\, he had a nervous breakdown that incapacitated him for 40 years. Only after the death of his domineering mother was he “resurrected”\, returning to his art and to life. By then\, he was 65 years old. \nThe Onassis Foundation owns a large body of sculptures\, drawings\, models\, and casts of pieces by Yannoulis Halepas\, drawn from the most important collection of his work – that of his niece and nephew\, Irene and Vassilis Halepas. Furthermore\, the marble fireplaces at the Onassis Library\, as well as the sculpture titled “Hecatoncheira” (“The Hundred-Handed One”)\, were created by the sculptor. \nIn the fall of 2018\, Argyro Chioti found herself on the island of Tinos and stayed in Pyrgos\, Yannoulis Halepas’ village. This was when she began researching his life and work\, with a view to it culminating in an Onassis Stegi production\, presented as part of the 2020-2021 season. The pandemic put paid to this plan. \nIn an attempt to make the most of the dead time brought on by lockdown\, Onassis Stegi awarded an artistic fellowship to the “Halepas” creative team. This allowed for a research trip that took them into the mountains and quarries of the island\, and to the Pyrgos School of Marble Sculpture. \n“Halepas” is the third production to be directed by Argyro Chioti for Onassis Stegi. It follows Efthimis Filippou’s “Bloods” (2014) and Dante’s “The Divine Comedy” (2017). Both these productions were also presented on stages in France. \n \nArgyro Chioti \nArgyro Chioti was born in Athens and works as a director and actress between Greece and France. In 2005 she cofounded the VASISTAS theater group.\nShe’s interested in stage forms looking toward poetry\, with intense dance and bodily expression\, often creating music choreographies in present time\, which focus on humans and the ways of being in certain social contexts.\nHer most recent stage directions are Aristophanes’s “Frogs” (Athens & Epidaurus Festival\, 2021) and Efthymis Filippou’s “Eau de Cologne” (National Theater of Greece\, 2019-20). She has also staged at the Onassis Stegi Efthymis Filippou’s “Bloods” (2014)\, and Dante’s “The Divine Comedy” (2017). In 2011\, VASISTAS received the Honorary Distinction for Best New Artist by the Greek Association of Theater and Music Critics\, for the performance “Spectacle” (an Athens & Epidaurus Festival production\, 2011). In 2013\, Argyro Chioti was honored with the “Eleftheria Sapountzi” award\, for her stage direction and artistic work. \nThe Boy (Alexander Voulgaris)\nThe Boy (Alexander Voulgaris) born in Athens\, he is a film director and musician.\nHe has directed six feature films (“Crying?”\, “Pink”\, “Higuita”\, “Thread”\, “Winona”\, and “Gym”) that have screened and won awards at many festivals\, both in Greece and around the world.\nHe has released more than 25 albums of music (“Please Make Me Dance”\, “Kostoumaki”\, “Iliotherapia”\, “Etoimoi”\, “Paradouleftra”\, “Antilopi”\, “Audrey”\, and more) and has written music for film and theater.\nHe has also appeared as an actor on stage and screen\, has directed music videos\, and in recent years has taught film at drama schools. \n \nProduction Info\nOrganization : International Festival of Andros\nOpen-air theater of Chora\, Andros \nCOPRODUCED BY ERT\nEMILIA ROMAGNA TEATRO (ΙΤΑΛΙΑ) \n➤ Tuesday\, 16th of August\, 21:00\nDuration: 75’ \nRegular price: 15 €\nDiscounted admission for students\, unemployed and people with disabilities: 13€

SUMMARY:Prometheus Bound
DESCRIPTION:For ticket reservations CLICK HERE \nFor his sophomore appearance at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus\, director Aris Biniaris continues his research on ancient tragedy with a new production of Prometheus Bound. The actors draw on the rhythmical qualities of the poetic text\, converting them into stage action through their bodies and voices. Against the backdrop of a pulsating\, live soundscape\, the performers bring to life the characters of an age-old but invariably timely story. “A story that can be perceived as a bleak commentary on the present or as a bright hope for the future”\, in the director’s own words. Yannis Stankoglou portrays the title character\, a timeless symbol of resistance to power. \n \nPrometheus Bound _ Artists\nTranslated by: Giorgos Blanas\nDirected by: Aris Biniaris\nMusical composition: Fotis Siotas\nSet design: Magdalini Avgerinou\nCostume design: Vasiliki Syrma\nLighting design: Alekos Anastasiou\nMovement – Choreography: Evi Oikonomou\nDramaturgy consultant: Elena Triantafyllopoulou\nMetrical analysis of original text: Kaiti Diamantakou\nScientific associate: Katerina Diakoumopoulou\nAssistant to the director: Dora Xagorari\nAssistant to the set designer: Xenia Papatriantafyllou\nAssistant to the costume designer: Alexandros Garnavos\nAssistant to the lighting designer: Nafsika Christodoulakou\nProps – Sculptures: Dimitra Kaisari Workshop\nMake-up artist: Evi Zafeiropoulou\nProduction manager: Stella Giovani \nExecutive producers: Vasileia Taskou\, Anna Pasparaki \n \nCast: Yannis Stankoglou (Prometheus)\, Aris Biniaris (Kratos)\, Konstantinos Georgalis (Via / Follower of Oceanus & Hermes)\, David Malteze (Hephaestus / Follower of Oceanus & Hermes)\, Alekos Syssovitis (Oceanus)\, Nancy Boukli (Io)\, Ioannis Papazisis (Hermes)\, Katerina Dimati (Follower of Kratos & Via)\, Grigoria Metheniti (Follower of Kratos & Via) \nChorus: Katerina Dimati\, Fiona Georgiadi\, Dafni Kiourktsoglou\, Grigoria Metheniti\, Alexia Sapranidou\, Thaleia Stamatelou\, Dimitra Vitta\, Eleni Vlachou \n \nOn-stage musician: Stamatis Fousekis (double bass\, effects) \nProduced by: Poreia Theatre \nCo-produced by: Municipal and Regional Theatre of Crete \n \nDirector’s Note\nPrometheus’ heart-wrenching and ceaselessly escalating attempt to resist Zeus’s authoritarian system of tyranny is like an arrow that pierces through the heart of the dramatic events\, before it finally finds its target at the very end. The aspect of the suffering god-prophet looms\, exposed to the bleakness of a desolate land\, in the craggy exile of his heinous shackles\, a precipice of detention\, punishment and dishonour. Prometheus’ impulses are ignited by the culmination of the sovereign’s cruelty and intractability in the face of anyone who dares to defy the decisions of the monarchy. Like a beacon of unquenchable exultation that refuses to subside or die down\, the hero constantly self-combusts\, triggering a reflexive awakening. Advocating for self-actualisation\, emancipation and the ultimate release from the destructive jealousy of cruel leaders\, he constantly rebuffs Zeus’ demands for compliance. Using fiery\, prophetic\, often pointed and sometimes compassionate language\, he calls upon us to connect with our inner source of existential grievance\, capable of overturning any long-standing tyranny and questioning its God-given status. \nZeus’ retort is devastating. Through his representatives\, he either demands blind faith in his decisions or compulsory collusion in his devious schemes. Every member of the ruling class reveals\, through their presence\, the dark ways of the sovereign and confirms the heartless nature of the tyrant. Instruments of power\, opportunist advisors and subservient volunteers\, accompanied by guards or subordinates\, communicate ultimatums\, amplifying the delineation of a merciless institutional hierarchy. The Oceanids look upon Prometheus’ painful efforts and the trajectory of the tyrant’s tactics. They seek out the incandescent soul of the prophet in his place of confinement and listen to his ruminations. They wonder whether it’s worth fighting for change when there’s such a hefty price to pay. \nThey rage over Oceanus’ opportunism and slowly recognise the arbitrary roar of the sovereign. Lastly\, they behold the maiden Io\, driven to madness by the gadfly\, and they tune into the convulsions of her tragic fate. Her tortured\, dispensable body\, mercilessly ravaged by the tyrant\, is the final proof of Zeus’ brutality. Hermes’ final commands add insult to injury\, irrevocably convincing them of Prometheus’ sound logic. The Oceanids’ final decision to hurl themselves into the bleak depths of Tartarus is a declaration of their emotional shift\, a moving show of bravery that transcends fear. The time has come for the flaming arrows of Prometheus’ impulses to finally meet their target. As a vessel of dramatic insight and a visionary of hope\, Prometheus prepares to hurl himself into Tartarus. His fall is a lofty provocation\, an incessant stimulation that tellingly escalates the clash between the unrelenting prophet and the ruthless\, implacable tyrant.\nAris Biniaris \n \n \n➤ Friday 9 August\, 21.00 \nGeneral admission: € 20\nDiscounted admission: € 15 (people with disabilities\, university students\, unemployed\, children)

SUMMARY:Hippolytus by Euripides - “Alaloum” amateur troupe of Andros
DESCRIPTION:For ticket reservations CLICK HERE \n“Full of ordeals is human life\, and we don’t find rest from sufferings. But we cherish our life\, because it’s the only one that shines on this earth. Who knows about another life? Everything is a myth and we are drifting.” \nHow many ordeals can we\, mortals\, perhaps endure? And how many ordeals do we cause ourselves\, the others\, our offspring\, and humankind? What is the aim of tragedy? To constantly remind\, throughout the centuries\, for the past two and a half thousand years\, that although we are rarely aware of the entire significance of our actions\, we must\, however\, strive to lead a contemplative life. Why? Because a simple action or inaction\, link in a chain of many others\, has the power to bring upon the peak or the destruction of entire generations. We are not alone. We owe it to each other to beware of our hubris\, born from our innate individualism. \nHippolytus\, who is obsessively clinging to chastity\, defies love\, this life-giving force and mother of all beings. He thus also shows contempt for women\, the mothers in this world. Aphrodite\, deeply insulted by his attitude\, causes Hippolytus’ stepmother Phaedra to fall in love with him\, and Hippolytus is led to his destruction. But even then\, he unwaveringly continues to believe that he is harmless; an innocent victim of circumstances. We\, the spectators\, though\, have become wiser. We have reflected on the future of humanity as Hippolytus fantasises it\, a humanity in a disastrous and ultimately stale trajectory. And we have understood; and we have been taught. \n \nTranslation: Stratis Paschalis\nDirection\, set design\, costume design\, movement\, choreography: Theoni Reid\nMusic: Stavros Kottakis\nLighting: Alexandros Politakis\nSound recording: Giannoulis Petsas\nPoster\, photography: Irini Petsa \nTheseus: Vassilis Pomonis\nPhaedra: Rania Konstantinidi\nHippolytus: Giannis Stefanidis\nNurse: Rika Mouriki\nMessenger: Giorgos Maltampes\nAphrodite: Maria Vamvaka\nArtemis: Despina Alonistioti\nOld woman: Katerina Soroula\nServant: Ioanna Katsarou\nWomen’s chorus: Despina Alonistioti\, Maria Vamvaka\, Dora Gennimata\, Giolanta Korovesi\, Theoni Reid\nHunters: Dimitris Mamais\, Taksiarchis Stratomitros\, Antonis Chalas \nA performance of the “Μύστες” (Mistes) group\, hosted by the “Alaloum” amateur troupe of Andros. \n**The permission to put on the performance has been granted by the Association of Greek Playwrights. \n➤ Wednesday 03.08.2022\, 21:00 \nGeneral admission: €10\nDiscounted admission: €7 (people with disabilities\, university students\, unemployed\, children) \n \n \n \n \n \nPhotos: Maria Lampriadou
