Evanthia Kairi, sister of philosopher Theofilos Kairis, wrote NIKIRATOS, the first theatrical play of modern Greece, which is about the Sortie of Messolonghi in 1826.<\/p>\n

According to Walter Puchner, Professor of Theatre Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, this play is particularly important for two reasons; first, because it was written by a woman in the 19th century, an era when women weren\u2019t involved in literature and the arts; and second, because it talks about the current affairs of the writer\u2019s era, i.e. about the tragic events of the Sortie.<\/p>\n

\"\u201c\u039d\u03b9\u03ba\u03ae\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2\u201d<\/p>\n

The play has undergone philological interventions by Giorgos Dambasis. The text has been rendered into modern Greek and includes three odes by the poet Andreas Kalvos (set to music by Mikis Theodorakis), along with an ode of Dionysios Solomos\u2019 \u201cThe Free Besieged\u201d poem and Rigas Feraios\u2019 \u201cCommand\u201d. Two songs written by French philhellene composers, one song about Messolonghi and the other about Navarino, have been also added to the play. Moreover, Evanthia Kairi has been theatricalised.<\/p>\n

Two other key contributions to the play are Anna Maier\u2019s and Asimina Kouri\u2019s lyrical songs, as well as the collaboration with the association of traditional costumes and weapons \u201cO LIAROS\u201d from Messolonghi.<\/p>\n
