“A deep and uncurable wound
is love’s hatred”

Aimilios Chilakis and Manolis Dounias direct one of the most heart-wrenching plays of global theatre. The two directors reimagined and adapted Medea according to the ancient tragedy paradigm, where all roles are played by three actors. Athina Maximou, Aimilios Chilakis and Anastasis Roilos take on the roles of the play (Medea, Jason, Creon, Tutor, Aegeus, Nurse, Messenger), while the Chorus features two exceptional performers: Giota Negka and Mirto Alikaki.

This emblematic play of ancient Greek literature is presented with a new translation by Giorgos Blanas and original live music by Dimitris Kamarotos. Eva Nathena is in charge of the set and costume design, Patricia Apergi takes care of the movement and Nikos Vlasopoulos is behind the lighting. The Chorus consists of some of the most talented actors and dancers of the new generation: Petrina Giannakou, Maira Gravani, Alexandra Drandaki, Giorgos Zigouris, Eleftheria Kontogeorgi, Erietta Manouri, Vasilis Boutsikos, Giorgos Nousis, and Dafni Stathatou.
The Chorus is accompanied on stage by the composer Dimitris Kamarotos.

In Medea, love overthrows logic, transforms people, besieges even the most sacred relationships such as the one between mother and child. Love betrayal turns into implacable hatred and directs everyone’s fate. Medea –who betrayed her family, stole the Golden Fleece and abandoned her homeland for Jason’s sake– is isolated in Corinth, among people who consider her to be a foreigner, a barbarian. When Jason informs her that he will marry Glauce, the daughter of Creon, king of Corinth, hurt and disdained Medea is transformed into a dark and vengeful beast. “Women may not bear to hear about battles and swords, but when their love is besieged, one cannot find a more war-hungry soul.”, in the words of Euripides, who has Medea eliminate her young rival by sending her poisoned gifts that cause her horrifying death. Betrayed Medea does not stop there, though. She commits the most unthinkable of acts: she murders her children with her own hands.

“Her inner beast has been unleashed and I don’t know
how it will appease until it satisfies its thirst for blood.”

Medea kills her children not simply to take revenge on Jason, but mainly in order to save them from her enemies’ hands; to prevent authority from murdering them. This is why, despite her atrocious action, Euripides ultimately glorifies her instead of punishing her.
