‘Seven against Thebes’
‘Seven against Thebes’ by Aeschylus, the performance of the National Theatre of Northern Greece that stood out, touched the audience and the critics and won their admiration, is coming back after the great artistic and commercial success it had last summer.
Aeschylus’ extremely powerful political tragedy, directed by the internationally renowned Lithuanian director Tsezaris Graouzinis and translated by the poet Giorgos Blanas, will begin from the Forest Theatre of Salonica on Saturday 24 June, while it will also constitute the opening performance of this year’s Epidaurus Festival, on 30 June and on 1 July 2017. Afterwards, a big tour across Greece will follow.

A few words for the play
The conflict between Oedipus’ two sons constitutes the theme of the ‘Seven against Thebes’ play. After Oedipus’ horrible actions were revealed, he assigned his sons, Eteoklis and Polinikis, to govern his city. They agreed to govern Thebes in turn. However, when it was Polinikis’ turn to govern, Eteoklis did not keep his promise. This caused wrath to Polinikis, who made an alliance with Adrastos, the king of the city of Argos, and organized a quest against Thebes. Seven leaders from each of the two opposing troops lined up on both sides of the seven gates of the city. Eteoklis and Polinikis ended up being one against the other in the seventh gate.
Eteoklis is the lonesome main hero of the tragedy. The siege is suffocating Thebes and he tries to organize the counterattack in a battle condemned to end without a real winner.
