In “Othello”, Shakespeare addresses the theme of infatuating love, which conflicts with racial, age and social differences. This play is a tragedy about jealousy, betrayal and fear of anything that is foreign and different. The brave Moorish general’s love with the young noble Venetian woman challenges the stereotypes of their times. However, instead of bridging differences, it shakes certainty and disturbs social balance.
Even though Othello has distinguished himself due to his bravery and ethics, and he has risen to multiple ranks, he doesn’t manage to become an equal member of the society where he lives; not only his skin colour and origin prevent him from doing so, but also his own insecurity. He remains the “black”, the “foreigner”, the “inferior”.
Shakespeare’s play also talks about man’s unceasing obsession to destroy anything that is ideal, different or able to break the existing social norms. Moreover, it criticizes the hypocrisy of society, which de-establishes its benefactors at the first opportunity.

The plot unfolds in Venice during its most prosperous times, when Moorish Othello is the bravest and most victorious general of the city. His decision to secretly marry young noble Desdemona infuriates Brabantio, the girl’s father, who turns to the Duke of Venice as he believes that the Moor seduced his daughter. Desdemona, however, publicly confesses her love for Othello, while the Duke of Venice, who needs Othello’s services, sends him to Cyprus to fight against the Ottomans. There, Iago, Othello’s ensign who hates his master because he promoted Cassio as his adjutant instead of him, poisons Othello’s mind with the suspicion that Desdemona and Cassio have a love affair. In fact, he uses his wife Emilia and aristocrat Roderigo in order to deceive his master. Othello is completely overwhelmed by erotic jealousy, while Iago’s hatred leads Othello to destruction.
