Andros is loved; it’s dearly loved. By locals, by visitors. Personally, I feel I’m both a local and a visitor. For the past 35 years, winters and summers, my love for the island has been growing stronger, deeper, for reasons that are obvious – the interesting people, the rich nautical history – but also for reasons odd and mysterious, such as those longed for and set by the heart.
Ah, I say, there are some creeks, some chapels, some dry-stone walls and cypress lines and rocks I haven’t managed to see with my own eyes.
Ah, I also say this year, at the Festival’s 10 th anniversary. Some performances and musicians escaped us… It was impossible to include them in the programme in the past nine years.
But how can I not feel grateful for so many wonderful artists who have honoured the stone theatre, offering us gorgeous texts, melodies and emotions so that we can take a breath and give ourselves a break from the pressure and rush of our everyday lives; but, also, so that we can reflect more deeply, more meaningfully, on human adventure.
These years Andros has been heard of more and more, and it’s been heard of for good reasons, thanks to the Festival amongst other things.
